genealogy Software
« on: Monday 04 August 08 15:21 BST (UK) »
Would like to know more about genealogy software. What do you recommend? I am fairly computer literate and would like something with a variety of manipulative features (attach records and anecdotal information , photos etc as well as view variety of records and people (generations) on a page. Would prefer computer not web based as not always online.

Dont want to pay a fortune but happy to pay value for money. Just don't know what is out there.

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

 ;DThanks

Mel

There are several programs that offer "free" downloads, I think legacy is one, family historian offer a 15 or 30 day trial, so do try some before you buy.  Then there is the completely free program from the LDS  PAF (Personal Ancestry File) that you can download for free from the familysearch website.
I use Rootsmagic, but have tried the download trial for family historian and I like that too.  I also have family treemaker version 5 I think, that came free with one of the Sunday papers!

Hi Mel, have found this interesting...

http://genealogy-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

When beginning, many years ago, have used PAF (Personal Ancestral File) free from Familysearch.org , also looked at the free issue from Legacy at the time.

Now have 2007 Family Tree Maker.

Hope it helps you decide, it is all about preference
