Stonehouse, Devon - COTTELL Births during 1820s
« on: Monday 04 August 08 14:57 BST (UK) »
I would much appreciate any assistance to identify birth or christening records for the following family members who were all born at Stonehouse, Devon (ie Plymouth) during the 1820s:

Arthur Patrick COTTELL, b. ~1820
Henry COTTELL, b. ~1823
William COTTELL, b. ~1825
Louisa Champneys COTTELL, b. ~1826
Adelaide Elminstone Dorothea COTTELL, b. ~1829

Their father was a James COTTELL of the Royal Marines and their mother was Elizabeth, nee HILL.

The surname is sometimes given as COTTEL or COTTLE.

There were five other siblings born earthier in Grantham, Lincolnshire and Gillingham & Chatham, Kent for whom I have already found christening records.

Best regards,
CM

Dear Priscilla,

Thank you for your response.  I've seen some of these Cottell events in Bedminster/Bristol before, except for Matilda Ann Cottell, its first time for me to see her name.  On the other hand, it's much harder to find the 1820s birth records from Devon.

Best regards,
CM

I have Henry Cottell b1823 in my tree.

So I was pleased to see your request for info. as it gave me several leads  :)

According to the census records I have (1861, 1871, 1881, 1891) Henry was born in France. The 1881 census gives most detail... St Servan, France. This is adjacent to St Malo on the coast. I have not yet tried following up on this lead.

Henry married Elizabeth B Rowland (b 1825). She and daughter Matilda were living with her father Thomas Rowland in the 1851 census with her sister Matlida Rowland, (who married Arthur Patrick Cottell in 1852?) and Ellen Rowland in 19 Richmond Terrace, Bedminster. Elizabeth (Hill) Cottell was next door with 5 of her children, including Adelaide Pounsbery with James Pounsbery (9mths), and another grandson Arthur Cottell, aged 8 .. it is not clear who was the parent of Arthur.

Henry and Elizabeth had 7 children incuding Edwin Hill Cottell, so the Hill name went on for another generation.

I have not yet found Henry in the 1851 census

If you would like more information on Henry and his descendants please let me know.

In one of your posts you stated that Joseph Hall Cottell was James & Elizabeth's second child. I have
Elizabeth Cottell aged 27 in the 1841 census, b elsewhere and Maria Cottell aged 38 b Gillingham, Kent in the 1851 census. Any thoughts as to whether one or both of these are "Elizabeth Maria".

I would also be interested to know more about James (Henry's father) and associated relations. I did find a reference to him at the battle of Trafalgar and and a request to the Navy for monies owing from the Royal Marines after his death on April 30 1842 a few days ago, but I gather you probably have that info. already.

Thanks

I could only find the baptism records of two children of James COTTELL (Capt, Royal Marines) and Elizabeth at St George's, East Stonehouse:

Georgiana Hannah COTTELL  18 March 1818 (Priv)

Arthur Patrick COTTELL  4 August 1819

Thanks very much. It's interesting to see that James was a captain in 1818.

1851 census has Louisa Cottell born in Bedminster
Henry put down born in St Servan in France on censuses.

but Adelaide Elminstone Dorothea COTTELL put down Stonehouse as her birthplace in1851 census, unfortunately she died before the 1861 census.... I gather there was no sign of her in Stonehouse in 1828/9/30.  Maybe she was baptised in Bedminster??

Below is a summary of the extended family of James Cottell, Captain in the Royal Marines, who eventually settled at Bedminster (Bristol).  I don’t guarantee it’s 100% correct but hopefully it’s not too far off.  I can provide a properly formatted version in MS Word but I can't work out how to attach a Word document to this posting.

Children of  William Cottell & Hannah of Barnstaple Devon (refer IGI):

Louisa Champneys Cottell, b. ~1826, Stonehouse, Devon (?)

Note: There were apparently quite a number of British families at St Servan in France, particularly families of naval officers based in Jersey.

Mabel Emily Cottell, b. 1863, Maiden Newton, Dorset
Herbert Vincent Cottell, b. 3Q 1864, Bedminster/Bristol (seaman)

Note: In the 1851 census Arthur William Joseph Cottell (aged 8) is staying with his grandmother Elizabeth Cottell in Richmond Terrace, Bedminster.

Oswald Dannies Cottell was co-owner of a vinegar works White, Cottell & Co which seems to have been located at various times in Long Lane, West Bermondsey and Lowth Road, Camberwell, both in London.

Worthington Hall Cottell & Herbert Vincent Cottell were put into the merchant navy by their family.  Both eventually settled in Townsville, Queensland, Australia.  Worthington gave his middle name as Halle rather than Hall.  Herbert Vincent worked for the Adelaide Steamship Company.
