Hi Adam,

I am new to rootschat and am researching family in this area. If you have entries for Carr, Lee and Hodgson I would be extremely grateful.

Many thanks

Hello Tom. Here are the inscriptions for Carr and Lee at Crook.

In loving memory of Jane Ann Carr, beloved husband John Carr of Race ????
departed this life May/6/1894 aged 21 years.
Ann Carr, beloved child of the above . (This stone is in poor condition. It is broken in two and laid flat)

In loving memory of Elizabeth Alice, wife of Ralph Sandas Carr, who died April/3/1898 aged 44 years.

In loving memory of George, the beloved husband of Elizabeth Lee of High Jobs Hill, Crook. Who died March/14/1912 aged 61 years(could be 51)

Sacred to the memory of Hannah, beloved wife of John Lee of Dawson street, Crook. Who died December/18/1885 aged 78 years.
Also the above named John Lee, who died August/24/1887 aged 78 years.

What dates are you looking for for regarding the Hodgson inscriptions?
There are 8 gravestones for Hodgson at Crook and 7 at Willington.

Adam

Hello Adam,

Many, many thanks for that information, it is really helpful. I am having difficulties with the Carr/Lee side and that gives me some very helpful information to test.

I have far more information about the Hodgsons. I am looking for:

1. Jacob and Elizabeth Hodgson and family. Jacob was born c1816 and died between 1871 and 1881 (possibly 1876?) whilst Elizabeth was born c1825 and died between 1861 and 1871. All the census records for 1851-1871 (Jacob only) show them living in Willington though neither was born there. The children that I have records of were born between 1847-1860.

2. William Thompson Hodgson (the son of Jacob and Elizabeth) and his wife Mary Jane. They lived in Willington, Cornsay and then Crook from about 1886 onwards. My grandmother has photos of the graves of William and Mary Jane themselves in 'Billy Row cemetery' (a church on a hill surrounded by countryside - possibly St Thomas, Stanley?) but they had many children - some of whom died in childhood - between 1871-1899 and only a couple are buried with them. In particular, I think Jacob died in Crook (c1874-c1886).

Many many thanks for your kind help,

Hello Tom. Here is one inscription for Willington.

In memory of Jacob Hodgson of Cornsay, who died August/8/1876 aged 60 years.
Also Elizabeth, wife of the above who died at Willington May/26/1862? aged 45 years.
Seeing that the dates are around the same time and not spread out from the mid 1800's-- mid 1900's I will post them all.
You can then sort out the details.
The church at Stanley, Crook is St Thomas but their is only one readable stone and that is only a kerb stone for a William killed in the first world war.

Hi Adam,

Many thanks for those, that is fantastic. I'm almost certain that those are the people that I am looking for (although Elizabeth is slightly older that I thought she was). If you do have an more around the right dates then  Iwould be very grateful. The record in Stanley sounds right too (their son William was killed on the first day of the Somme).

Many thanks again for your generous information,
