Hi Greg,
Well, I was just going to post the details regarding births at St.Mary's, but clivealbert beat me to it!
Great - saves the typing fingers!
Anyway, as promised I've been digging around at the Ilkeston local studies.
Not found much you don't already know, but did find an entry regrding Thomas' death in the Ilkeston Pioneer:
Deaths
On the 20th inst. at Gallows Inn, Ilkeston, Thomas Bonser, aged 72 years.
Didn't say where the funeral took place, though :(
However, I did find out that the existing graveyard at St.Mary's was full by 1860s so in 1862 a new extension graveyard for St.Mary's was consecrated and this was used until the opening of the public cemetery in 1891/2.
No-one seemed to know where it was at local studies so I went to the Erewash museum, and who did I meet but Danny Corns and Stephen Flinders! Stephen kindly walked with me to the site of the graveyard - several headstones are still there, but it was pouring with rain so he said it would be easier to check the transcripts and take it from there.
Stephen is the gentleman who has produced the CDs on the St.Mary's registers, and Danny is the gentleman who wrote the article mentioning your ancestor 'totty' Bonser (Hallam Fields article).
As I said, they are going to check the transcripts for MIs for the extension graveyard for St.Mary's and also Stanton Road, too, and will get back to you.
I've also been adsking to see if local folk know if Bonser's still live in the area. One gentleman seems to think they do, and said your best bet is to write to the local newspaper, The Ilkeston Advertiser', and ask them to write something asking for any family to get in contact - they always like to hear from people who have stories about old Ilkeston families, apparently.
Anyway, Greg, I have to return some books I borrowed, for my own Adams' family  research, so if I do find anything else I will keep you posted.
What a fantastic response you've had!
Bye for now,
Paulene :)

Clive,Paulene
Thank you for all the information and work you are doing for me. I had emailed Stephen a while ago not knowing about his CD. It was from some magazine I was reading that I found his name,  and he replied saying he would get back. It is a small world that you would run into him. I have been researching the leads all of you have given me and the responses are slow but the news and information on how they lived is wonderful.

Clive thank you for getting the Parish record information. Can you tell me, what is wrote in the entry's is it hand written typed how much information is there I have never seen one only off the one CD disk I have purchased and am interested on how it was transcribed.

thank you all again

Greg

As a member of Derbyshire Family History Society I have just received their latest magazine, Issue 126, September, 2008.   An article on page 39 "Local News" includes extracts from the Derby Mercury, 12th May, 1886 and one extract reads "ILKESTON - On Thursday evening, as Mr. B. Wilks, grocer, Nottingham-road, Ilkeston, was passing the Erewash Canal on his way home he saw a boy named Bonser in the water and on the point of drowning.   Mr. Wilks at once plunged in as he was, and was able to bring the lad safely to shore"'

Incidently could the surname of Bonser have originated from the corruption of the name of the village called Bonsall in the Peak District?    I used to live in Bonsall, Derbyshire (an ancient, picturesque, upland, leadmining village hanging above the Via Gellia near Cromford) for a number of years and contributed to the history book written by Bonsall History Society, and in researching for the book we found that Bonsall was often corrupted to "Bonser or Bonsar" by the villagers when referrring to the village, and that this dialect version had been used over hundreds of years.

I know that these two items of information don't help with your research, but I thought that you might find them interesting.

Margaret.

Thank you for the Article It is possible that the Bonser boy was a relative as Thomas and his son both worked as boatman on the canal. I will have to see what boys were around at that time period. As for the name I do not know but I do find it very interesting. Thank you again for the article it is another piece of history I can put in my file.

Hi Greg,
I was helping with another canal boatmen thread, and suddenly thought of you.
How's the research going - have you managed to get hold of those Ilkeston St.Mary parish registers yet? Hope so!
I also found a couple of useful sites that I thought you might like:

Apologies if you already have them.
Paulene :)

Hi Arnie, My wife(very much alive) is connected to the Ilkeston Bonsers via her mother who was the Great Granddaughter of Thomas and Millicent. I came across this site at the weekend and would not normally join but have done since it seems the only way of getting a message to you regarding the possible swapping of information. Cheers
