Bucks Herald 2nd December 1843
Buckingham Petty Sessions 25th November
John Reynolds, of Padbury, appeared to answer a charge of breaking a bobbin-wheel, belonging to Newman Tomkins.
It appeared that the father of Reynolds died at Tomkins’s house some little time ago, and as the parish had paid the expenses of his funeral, he said the son might have his scanty remnant of goods and chattels.
Tomkins’s wife had long attended on the old man, and had much unpleasant trouble with him; he had therefore given her his few things.
Reynolds was ordered to pay 5s expenses and not to molest Mrs Tomkins for any of the goods.
Mr. D P King kindly refused to take the 5s which Tomkins ought to have paid.

Thanks Dave

That would fit in with my family tree as John Reynolds' father, also named John, died on 19 October 1843. The death certificate records John being present at the death of his father.

In the 1841 census, John Reynolds (senior) was living with Newman Tomkins, his wife Sarah and three children in Main Street, Padbury.

From the newspaper report, it seems somewhat confusing why Tomkins ought to have paid the 5 shillings if it was John Reynolds who was being charged.

Hi Wendy,

Like you I am related to Thomas Reynolds of Padbury through his daughter Eliza Reynolds b1836. I understand through the census that her mother was Rhoda ?.
I am very keen to find out Rhoda's maiden name as she is my 4xGreat grandmother.
If you could enlighten me I would be so grateful. If you are interested in Elizas
branch of the family I have my tree on Ancestry.
Kind regards
Sue
