McKinnon in Eigg
« on: Thursday 31 July 08 14:37 BST (UK) »
I know that Eigg comes under Inverness-shire but I am looking to confirm a birth place for a gg Grandfather of mine.  Census information from 1861 1871 have him born in Ardnamuchtan and Rothesay respectively while 1881 and 1891 Census have him born Inverness-shire Eigg and then Argyllshire Eig.
His parents were Malcolm McKinnon a shepherd and Mary MacDonald but that is all I know of them.
Malcolm Married Christina McMillan in Greenock November 23 1854, children Isabella b 20 Sept 1855 Malcolm b 20 Feb 1857, Margaret b 1859, Lachlan b. 16 Feb 1861, another Isabella 18 Apr 1863 (my g grandmother), Mary, b.1865 John b 1867/8, Alexander b 15 Aug 1869.  Christina died in 1871 and Donald in 1899.

Can anyone help with any information regarding Eigg and possible Census of 1841 when Donald would have been between 8 and 12

Many Thanks

I think you mean Donald? Malcolm and Mary's son?

He's rather like a Donald McKinnon I have been researching - he is sometimes recorded as Daniel.  His marriage is also recorded in the OPR in North Bute on 17 November 1854 under the name Daniel.

This seems to be the family in 1841:

Holum, Eigg (Small Isles)  GROS 116  ED 1  Fo 1 p 16

Malcm McKinnon 40 Shepherd Y
Mary 30 Y
Donald 10 Y
Lauclan 5 Y
Marion 3 Y
Alexander 1 Y

So all born in county.

Nell

Oo, snap!  :)

Hey both sound interesting, and eh identical!!!

I have marriages, birth of children ect most handwritten and although hand writing is difficult I must say Donald comes through...

sorry I didn't say Donald as my gg Grandfather, I was 1 step ahead as his parents were Malcolm McKinnon & Mary McDonald so you are right but well deduced also!

Thank you Little Nell and Lindy-Lou for your information I located the Census Record for 1841, possibly found Mary + some children still on Eigg but no Malcolm in 1851 and found a Mary McKinnon wid in North Bute in 1861.  All saying she was born on Muck.

Anyway I will re-post in Inverness further queries.

Thanks again for your assistance.

Sorry but unfortunately I don't think there is a connection. I have my McKinnons on Eigg in the 1851 Census then they appear to have moved to North Bute, on to Rothesay then Greenock/Glasgow before my branch end up in Ayrshire.

However having McKinnon as a middle name may suggest that his mother's maiden name was McKinnon or his grandmother..either way I would bet there is a family connection.  My Grandmother's maiden middle name was McKinnon, I didn't know her or much about her but it turned out to be the lead I needed to trace her family.  Her Mother's name was McKinnon!
Perhaps his Death certificate or his mother's will show the link.
The Small Isles may be a good place to look as well as outer Hebrides, and Skye when you do find the link.

Good luck  ;) with your search sorry I can't help you more.
