Chesterton

Hi My great grandfather was born Audley Road Chesterton  1876.... anyone out there know anything of this area of chesterton at that time? is it still there?

Hi Cardiff,
The Chesterton I know is a district north of Newcastle under Lyme in North Staffs. It's very much "still there" - quite industrial in parts though you can see it was probably rural at one time (it's on the edge of the Stoke/Newcastle conurbation, going towards Audley - hence the name of the road).
There is still an Audley Road - it's also the B5500. Multimap.com should be able to help you "place" it.
Was your great grandfather a miner? There were some large pits in the area until recently. One of them (Apedale) has been reclaimed to make a lovely wild area/parkland with a small mining museum attached.

The Chesterton in Newcastle-under-Lyme which Cicely mentioned before I believe, circa 1881, was a part of Wolstanton, which is now a part of greater Stoke-on-Trent.

Thank you both for your help.
regarding the mining I believe he did work in the mines in that area as did his father-in law (my great great grandfather).
They all came to south wales to work in the mines of the Rhondda valley around  1892.

my husband was born and bred, in chesterton,and we still only live 2 miles away,a lot of his fathers ancestors, came from chesterton ,audley,  talke o the hill, red st ,ect. and his mothers family, came from wales, and ended up in audley for the pits,  and Ryan as far as i know chesterton, wolstanton, and newcastle, are still in the borough of newcastle under lyme, we are{ castle blacks.} and proud of it,a few years back a poll was taken to see if  newcastle should amalgamate with stoke, and it was rapidly chucked out by us people from castle, even though people cross the borders for work or shopping, there is still a very definite border, and pride, wether you come from stoke, or newcastle, lecture over! regards nora

Hi Nora,
Yes, I understand what you mean about pride & borders etc. My Gran talks as if Newcastle was on the otherside of England!! She says "We walked and cycled all the way to Newcastle [from Tunstall] and back when I was a girl", what for I can't quite recall, but I think she said that the best confectioners in the region was in Newcastle and she had some family there too. The only reason I refer to Newcastle as a part of the greater Stoke-on-Trent region is that if you take a look at most maps Newcastle (Wolstanton and Chesterton included) fall under the Stoke-on-Trent admin district.

Hi Ryan, thanks for the reply, i think most people from the  loyal and ancient borough of Newcastle under Lyme, would be surprised to find we fall under the stoke on trent admin district,but if the maps say so we must. A few years ago, as you crossed the borders into stoke, a notice  said " you are now entering Stoke on Trent, a nuclear free zone"I always thought, what about us in Newcastle?dont we count,  and i understand your gran, a few years back going up to hanley for a days shopping, was like a treat,and having dinner in british home stores restaraunt, it was a big thing then,and hanley is only 4 or 5 miles away, {a little secret, i am officially a potter as i was born in hartshill during the war, when my mother was lodging with my dads great aunt,while he was in the air force.} but all the rest of my life, has been in my beloved Newcastle. regards nora.
