Hi Janice,

What exactly do you know about Thomas, is he or Margaret or Ann the ancestor you're tracing back?  Please could you give the census information you already have that you're certain is your family, and give all their birthplaces as well as dates of birth, then we can help you work backwards

Kind regards
Barbara

Hi,
My Direct line is

My Grandmother  Alice Stephenson 1881-1967  Durham
                            Thomas Stephenson 1847-1904 Easington
                            John Stephenson 1822-1875 Easington
                            Joseph Stephenson 1790 Easington

Thomas Stephenson 1813-1857 Easington
Married
Jane Siddle 1818-1842
Their son
Thomas Stephenson 1838 Easington
married I only think can't be certain Margaret Siddle 1836 and then Ann Hudson.
Jane Siddles sister Hannah Siddle 1822-1859 married John Stephenson 1822-1875.

Are Margaret Jane and Hannah all sisters?
The Stephenson were nearly all Butchers.
Hope this makes sense
Regards
Janice

Yes it makes sense and the birthplaces certainly help!  But if you have any marriage certificates to show the fathers' names and occupations, then you would know if the girls were sisters.

Do you have the Stephensons in 1841 & 1851  1881 & later census?

Will have another look for 1861

I see that Thomas  b.1838 was with his uncle & aunt John & Mary Stephenson in 1851 census

This looks like Thomas with his brother John in 1861 married but no Margaret (Siddle) unless she'd already died and he should be a widower

John Stephenson   brother  s  21    "               "

Joseph Siddle     uncle  m 28  Painter          Shotley Bridge

I'd say they were both the same Thomas, and I'd say the first 3 children were his and Margaret's ~ or he married a different Ann a bit earlier.

here's 1871 census
RG10/4970 Folio 16 Page 26
Thomas Stephenson  head m 32  Butcher   Easington
Ann Ap        "              wife  m 26                 Tynemouth
Emily           "               dau       9
Walter S      "              son       7
Thomas S      "               "         5
Ann H Stephenson    5 months
all children born Easington

birth reg for Walter Siddle Stephenson  Dec Qu 1863 Easington 10a 321
"  for Ann Hunter Stephenson  Dec 1870 Easington 10a   413

You'll only be certain if you buy some birth certificates to find mother's name, and then the marriage certs, the local registrar would check for known details before you buy the cert, to be sure they're the right ones.

Hope this helps,

Barbara  :)

Hello Janice

I am researching the same family but from the HUDSON angle.  It is the same Thomas and he did marry twice!

Ann Applegarth HUDSON (1844 to 1915) (listed as Ann Ap on the above census) was the daughter of Thomas HUDSON and Margaret Applegarth HUNTER.

Thomas STEPHENSON's children:
Emily, Walton (or Walter) Siddle, and Thomas (poss middle name is Shotton) were the children of his first marriage.  Children to Ann Applegarth HUDSON are:
Ann Hunter, James Lamb, Robert Ernest and Charles Rechab (all STEPHENSONs of course).
I do have a bit more if you are interested...   Thomas HUDSON was the brother of my great x3 grandmother, Jane HUDSON who married Thomas LONGSTAFF.

Great to read your messages
Louise

Hello Louise,

It's good to have the findings confirmed, don't know if Janice got any certificates following her last reply, but I'm sure she'll be very pleased to hear from you

Kind regards,
Barbara
