Have you tried getting the obituary for the one who died in 1988? You might be able to find family members to contact and talk to.

Good luck. Try finding a public library in the town or county he died in and email them, or check out RAOGK in the county and state he died in and ask them if they can get the obit for you. Good luck and keep us posted. We are nosy here.  ;D

Success, After many years of on and off searching my wife was given a Ancestry DNA test kit and after about 12 months a close match  which was an Aunty and another a cousin it turned out his name was William Carl Smith and have now made contact with all his family .He died in 2016 aged 94.
