Annie Maria BARRABLE - where do I start searching?
« on: Tuesday 29 July 08 11:08 BST (UK) »
I've just found out that my maternal grandmother's name is Annie Maria BARRABLE and I always thought it was EDWARDS. ;D  She has been my brickwall forever and last night I received a copy of her marriage certificate.  I almost fell off my chair and then I couldn't see the keyboard for the tears.  It was sent to me by someone who just happened to have it in her database of BROPHYs.

She is listed on her marriage certificate as being 20 yrs. and her husband, James Henry BROPHY as full age.  They were married in Port Elizabeth, South Africa on 28 May 1901.

Before I start the big "hunt", does this name ring a ding dong with any other RC member?

Also, where should I start looking for her ancestors, South Africa or the UK (and which part  ::)).

Can anyone out there shed some light on the origin of this surname, please, pretty please? ;D

Hi CP,

Great news for you! It is always so exciting to find something so significant.

There seemed to have been a number of BARRABLE families in the Eastern Cape in the mid to late 1800's.

One William BARRABLE married to Mary Ann FLOOKS.  This family is being researched by Sharon Marshall (google her name and rootsweb to find her email)

Another BARRABLE fellow is detailed in The Family Register of the South African Nation :
David Solomon BARRABLE b.  9 May 1835 Essex, England. Arrived in the Port Elizabeth in 1847 and he seemed to have lived in Grahamstown and later Queenstown, where he became a prominent and active member of the community.  He was married to Elizabeth Annie ALLISON 19 July 1864. He died on 22 May 1912 at the age of 77.

Although a further search suggests that your Annie Maria couldn't be this couple's child ... they had a daughter named Lizzie Gladys BARRABLE born May 1881 (same year as Annie Maria)

There is also a Thomas BARRABLE, married to Margaret ?  This couple had children christened in Fort Beaufort and King Williams Town.  The following childrens' christenings have been transcribed and uploaded to the mailing lists :
Melletta Jane BARRABLE  Born: 18 Oct 1872
Thomas Guilford Hood BARRABLE Born : 1870
Mary Harriett BARRABLE Born : 20 Aub 1876

Ellen Stanton's transcriptions offer up another BARRABLE :
Husband: John BARRABLE, Full, Bachelor, Printer, residing Queenstown
Wife: Harriet Matilda FRANK, Full, Spinster, residing Queenstown
Date: 11/20/1872
Witnesses: John A. ULYATE, Lucy STILWELL

From the following record transcribed by Ellen,  Harriet Matilda seems to have re-married in 1883, suggesting that John BARRABLE had died
Husband: Arthur BEAMISH, Full, Bachelor, residing Queenstown
Wife: Harriet Matilda BARRABLE, Full, Widow, residing Queenstown
Date: 6/5/1883
Witnesses: G. STILWELL, Emilie STILWELL
Minister: J. E. PARSONSON
Minister: W. B. RAYNER

There are also a number of BARRABLE death notices/estate files detailed on the NAAIRS.  These images could be ordered.

I do hope you can make some sense of the above.  I'd definately suggest contacting Sharon.

best wishes
Leanne

Hi Leanne,

Thanks for your response and for all the information too.  That's given me something to work on.  I am so grateful for your help.

I tried NAAIRS but they must have been working on the site because I couldn't gain access.  I will definitely have another look over the weekend and see what I can find.

I will email Sharon M. from Rootsweb as I am sure there has to be a connection to the FLOOKS name.  I have also received 2 replies from people at Ancestry regarding the BARRABLE and FLOOKS names and also another who has a BARRABLE connection to the name KEMP.

I will also email Ellen S. as she is one terrific lady when it comes to help.   Just like our RC members, always willing to bend over backwards to help people.

Once again, many, many thanks for your help and your input.

Regards
CP

Hi

Just stumbled apon your post. My name is Tim Barrable and I'm from the UK but now live in New Zealand

I have done some research on the Barrable name and it's posted at the 'Barrable Family' group on Facebook.

Good luck in your search. WE have traced back most Barrables to 15th Century Cornwall and the SA branch to a Capt Barrable in the British Army at the time of the Boer War.
 :)
Cheers, Tim

Hi Daizi me bestest mate ;D ;D,

Great chatting on the phone tonight.  Thanks for that information.  Sure sounds like it could be my Grandma, as she was married in 1901 in P.E.  Here's hoping ...  ;)  It sure IS great being back online again and getting stuck into my Family History.

Hugs
Corny
