I have a MOFFETT history back to 1720 in the ballybay area near monaghan ireland.  I think they were "planted in ulster" at the start of the 16th century, they might have been from the moffat area of the borders, but there were also moffitts from cumberland to ireland. Remember most people did not write and relied on a scribe to write for them so the spelling could easily be corrupted.
