Census Lookup - John Bruce
« on: Saturday 26 July 08 02:20 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am seeking information on John Bruce (b abt 1837 Northumberland). He had a brother Thomas (b 1836 Alnham). Any Census details regarding parents and any other siblings. At one stage John Bruce was living at Backworth Colliery.  Thankyou.

Hi Printer

If John BRUCE married, do you have him on any post-marriage census giving more than just "Northumberland as his place of birth? When was he living at Backworth Colliery?

From your other posts on brother Thomas, who married Elizabeth WANLESS - do you have their marriage certificate which might name his father?

Cheers

Hello Ambly,

Thankyou for your help. I have only this month, quite by accident too, discovered that Thomas Bruce, who I couldn't find anywhere in Northumberland, was living in NZ! I have obtained a copy of his Will, and he named his brother, John Bruce of Backworth Colliery, his main beneficiary. The other beneficiary was his sister, Jane Besford, w/o Anthony Besford, of Shiremoor, Northumberland.  The Will was dated 1886 - Thomas Bruce died in 1887.

Any information about these siblings would be appreciated. I have found Anthony and Jane Besford in 1881, living at Whitley. They had 7 children and I would like to know what became of them. Thankyou, hope this helps.

Printer,

The Besfords on C1881 (5088-100-2) although living  within the "jurisdiction"
of Tynemouth(Parish) >Whitley(Township) >Cullercoats community, were in Duke St, within the colliery of Shiremoor ( Backworth was a neighbouring colliery)

Shiremoor hadn't enough  antiquity or "sway"at the time to warrant a mention. ( Although the enumerator makes this clear  where Shiremoor colliery sits, on his "description of the district" on page 5088-97)

Hi Printer

I was following the 1851 BREWIS lead, in effort to try and find  the requested  "....Any Census details regarding parents and any other siblings...." of John and Thomas.......
but after spending a bit of time following them around I discovered!!  you'd  already known of the Matthew NEWTON connection, where it was all pointed towards:
* Thomas and John having a younger sister named Jane,
* Their mother was (probably) Elizabeth nee BROWN who was first married to John BREWIS ,
* In  Census 1861 sister Jane is listed with her maiden name spelled as BRUCE in the household of Matthew and Elizabeth NEWTON,
* Elizabeth died later in 1861 and Matthew remarried 1865 to Rebecca SWINMORE.
All covered here:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,299330.0.html

Not sure if you have the 1841 though,  for brothers Thomas and John, with their parents John and Elizabeth BREWIS:

1841: South Street - Parish of St Johns, Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland
HO107 -  Piece 848 / Book: 4 / Folio 8 / Page: 10
John BREWIS 35, Husbandman - Y
Elizabeth BEWIS 30 - Y
Thos BREWIS 5 - Y
John BREWIS 1 - Y
Matthew COLLINGWOOD 34, Husbandman, - Y

Considering son John was aged 1 in 1841, and aged 12 in 1851 - it seems more likely he was born 1838/1839 as  as opposed to abt 1837.
Says he was born in St John, (where he was living in 1841) so his birth will probably be under the Newcastle on Tyne District, and very possibly is this one:

Sep Qtr 1839 - John BREWIS - Newcastle on Tyne - Ref: Vol 25, pg 340

I think I've found him in the later Census - will post details up in a mo!

Cheers  ;D

Hello AMBLY,

Thankyou so much.  That is so helpful and very much appreciated. I do apologise for omitting any reference to Matthew Newton in original query. That would have saved some time. Are you able to assist with Anthony & Jane Besford, or should I make a separate posting? Thankyou again.

Hi Printer  ;D
No problem! I'll have a look afterward for Anthony and Jane too - actually  I did find them in 1891 and 1901 and I think 1871 last night and had it all typed up - only to have the computer shut down mid-type due to  a power cut during the "Big Storm of the Decade" here last night (I'm down in Palmerston North way  ;) , so I lost it all!  How did you fare  ???

I was just going to first  see if I can find the rest of the children of John and Elizabeth - the ones who'd left home before 1901  ;D

Cheers
