Hi Diblet,
Any chance that you have the record for Samuel Drewry's marriage to Miss Alder in Witham, 8th August, 1789?

Hi Tony and Julia

Sorry to have taken so long to reply. At this time of the year I don't spend much time doing my family tree. Too busy outdoors making the most of any sunshine!

However, I had a few minutes this morning and looked a couple of things up.

Tony, as you were very precise with your date/names, the marriage was easy to find. Here are the details;

St Nicholas, Witham.
Ninth August 1789 by licence.

Samuel Drewry bach. of St. Ann's Westminster
Ann Alder spin. OTP

Both signed their names and the witnesses were Thomas Allen and William Constable.

Julia, you have quite a lot on your list, but here's one I found for you;

St Nicholas, Witham
Baptism. 30th December 1804 James William Blaxall. Parents are James and Elizabeth Blaxall.

If you've got heaps of people in Witham and you're in a hurry to trace them, it may be worth buying the fiche from the ERO so that you can research them at home. It's not too expensive and will give you a lot of pleasure trawling through them! (Or order them from a local LDS church if you have one nearby).

Hope this helps you both.
 :D

You're welcome Tony.

You'll be off into the murky world of the City of London now!

Good Luck.  ;)

Have done a bit of London already, Diblet.
See for example  my web page http://www.drewry.net/TreeMill/indiI421.html.
Unfortunately the new knowledge raises new questions.
The big one is:
Could Ann Alder's name actually have been Ann Allen (as the witness, Thomas Allen)
One could certainly imagine Allen being transcribed as Alder.
The reason for this is that later Samuel and Ann name a child for Thomas Allen (Almost certainly Ann died of problems from the birth of this child.)
I imagine that the witness Thomas Allen could have been Ann's father or brother.
Do you know how I would go about seeing the original entry?

Tony

Ann's surname is definitely Alder. She has also signed her own name Ann Alder.
Thomas Allen may have just been a good friend.
It's the original entry I've looked at on microfiche so no mis-transcribing en-route!

 :)

Thank you  again Diblet.
With hindsight it was a bit of a long shot given that at least 3 newspapers have Alder. Thomas Allen must have been a good friend, as you say. Hopefully we will turn up some more Alders. Have found that there are plenty of alder trees growing along the Witham.
But it is great to finally have Ann's surname. And to have a confirmation that Samuel of Westminster and Samuel of Lincoln are the same Samuel married to Ann. (We had only just discovered the link between Samuel of London and Robert of Lincoln).
All the best,
Tony

Hi Diblet

I understand you have some records for St Nicolas Witham. I have been told my 4xggf was baptised there on 23 May 1796. His name was Richard HARRIS. I understand the Essex records are online now - do you know if St Nicolas is included? If so, I might have to sign up to expand this line. If you were able to confirm this baptism, it woud be a great help though.

Thanks June
