Steyning Union Workhouse
« on: Friday 25 July 08 21:07 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know the address of the Steyning Union Workhouse in the 1910's?  I know it was on Upper Shoreham Road but I don't know the street number.  I believe my mother was born there.  How could I verify this?  Thanks for any assistance.

Hi,

This should help;

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html?Steyning/Steyning.shtml

Also states where records kept.

Hi
Welcome to rootschat.  It may sound obvious but your mother's birth certificate will give the address and the name of the informant, who might be the workhouse master.   Or do you have that and it gives a street number?  Perhaps we could look up the address in the 1901 census and see what it says?

Thank you for your reply.  My mother's birth certificate says she was born at 2 Upper Shoreham Road in 1919.  Her birth mother's brother registered the birth and his address was also 2 Upper Shoreham Road.  I have seen on other forums that this was the address for the workhouse but I would like confirmation of this.  I have read that, to avoid any detriment to someone born in a workhouse, that only the address of the place of birth was listed.
Any answers??

Hello
Don't know wether you have resolved your problem but I had two 1st cousins twice removed who gave birth to illegitimate children in the workhouse in Shoreham in the early 1900's and the address I believe  might be:  9 Ham Road.

Regards
Viv

Hi The workhouse moved from Ham Road to Upper Shoreham Road .. I will check the exact date but it would have been around 1905.

The births are often registered as 2 Upper Shoreham Road, although the workhouse occupied a frontage of over half a mile so numbers are not relevant.  I have seen other people mentioning different numbers on their birth certificates. (in the tens).

Hi Spinalman,
Thank you for your reply.  Since I first posted my query in 2008 I have been to visit the Workhouse on Upper Shoreham Road.  Unfortunately there are not a lot of buildings left but it was still very interesting to see where my Mom was born.  In research I have done on its history it opened in 1901 and the old Ham location was used as a children's home.
Best regards,
Cein
