Henry Walker, Claybury Hospital
« on: Thursday 24 July 08 21:39 BST (UK) »
Hi!

I'm not sure this is the right place to post this (sorry if it isn't!) but I have a question...

My great grandad died at Claybury Hospital, in Woodford Bridge, Essex, in about 1925. Could anyone tell me where he would probably have been buried ? Also, is there a way I could find information on the circumstances he entered that hospital and the date he died? All I know about him is he was born in St George E, London in 1869.

In advance, thank you for your kind help.

Hi Steph
I am glad i looked at your location before i replied ;D. I would suggest that you put an orbit lookup request in a weekly newspaper on the Essex board. You would have to find the year though, maybe a member or yourself.I don't have access to the G.r.O. If you are lucky enough to have one found that will answear two of your questions the date he died and where the funeral or cremation took place. You would  then have to get his death cert which will give the cause of death. Hope this is of some help to you

Celia

Sorry Celia, I don't understand what you mean : "an orbit lookup request in a weekly newspaper"? I believe he may have died in 1925 after checking freebmd. But is there a way I could find the exact date then?

Thank you very much for your kind help Celia. As you know I live in France so it's not easy to find all the information.  :)

Steph
I shall re-phrase that ;D you are now on the Essex lookup request board ;)
When people die the family sometimes put a orbit/obituary in a weekly news paper. These papers are usually on film in the main library reference room,You can ask for a lookup in a newspaper for1925. As i said you need the year not a may have ;D because if it was 1925 month not known. It means anyone looking for the orbit has to go through 12 months of papers on the film thats 48 papers and he might not be there :(

Thanks a lot for your explanation Celia. Actually we do that in France as well, I just didn't know it was called an orbit. :-[

What kind of information could I find on an orbit then? The exact date and place of death? Actually I found on freebmd it could be june (qr) 1925 but I would like further information.

Thanks again for your kind help, Celia.  :D

Steph, see my first post ;)

If your G.Grandad is registered in the June 1/4 of 1925 that helps the looker upper ;D a lot because that means only 12 papers to go through.I myself have been doing orbit lookups for years so i know how time consuming it is.As well as the usual Orbit column i myself always go through the page of the paper.Because sometimes you find an article giving more info.It depends what their status was in the comunity. If there was a coroners report, that would also be published.I don't think your G.Grandad would have one though because he died in hospital maybe of natural causes. Not suicided or other gruesome death.

Good Luck Celia

Thanks Celia, his family didn't have a lot of money as his wife had to bring up their 8 children on her own following Henry's accident which damaged his brain. If they had to pay to have an orbit in the newspaper, I'm not sure they could have done.

Anyway, once again thank you for your help!  ;)

My father died in Claybury hospital in 1984. The funeral was arranged by the hospital and the death was registered in Redbridge, Essex. I believe he was buried in Roding Lane Cemetery but that was first used in 1940.

Have a look at http://www.eolfhs.org.uk/eolcem07.htm
for details of other cemeteries in the area.

Hope this helps a little.

Thank you very much Les, I'll try and contact two of these cemeteries that had burials in 1925.
