Well what can I say :D some of the best responses I have ever had on a message board such as this!

Bren looks like you found the marriage as Kris's find matches as Jacks mother was  Mary Jane Stephens & the family lived on Union Hill St Columb Cornwall & Henry or   as he was known Harry was indeed his younger brother. And what Althea found is probably his 1st sailing to NZ via Australia. Althea was Broadway Studios Newmarket also in Auckland?  - this where the wedding photo was taken. Would I have to apply for the marriage cert via a NZ website?

My grandmother always said her grandfather forgave his daughter for getting pregnant the 1st time as it was a mistake BUT a 2nd time???!!!!

Many many thanks for everybody's hard work & patience!

Elton

Great to have pics to go with someone we have been "chasing'
Yes Newmarket is in Auckland
http://www.zoomin.co.nz/map/nz/auckland/newmarket/ and Broadway is a street, so probably thats how studio had its name

Apply for marriage cert at

Use the website to download an application form and check current prices: http://www.bdm.govt.nz

Hello Althea

Just thought I would let you know I added Adeline Emily to my Ancestry tree & found a match. Adeline died age 98 in 1995 Truro Cornwall - what an age. Was born 05.10.1896 Totara North, Kaeo, Bay of Islands, New Zealand

The children in the family photo early 1930's were Douglas & Dorothy (see the photo restoration board).

John Salter Stephens was my Maternal grandfather.

If anyone wants any information regarding him them please contact me at

(*)

I would also be interested in more details regarding John's mother, her sister my Paternal grandmother andany general information about the Stephens side.

Hi all

Jack was born 1897 in St Columb Cornwall & shown as Jack on his birth index/1901 census.  The index gives his middle name as Salter. His mother according to my late grandmother (her aunt) was never married.

I am persuming he sailed out of London on the Strathaird to Sydney with his wife Adeline Emily - occupation Hairdresser - last known address Gorley Veum Tregoney Truro Cornwall. Country of intended future permanent residence given as NZ. I am saying persuming as I can't be 100% be sure if this the 1897 Jack - although his age is given as 53 & middle name is shown as Salter (both as per birth index).

I have the family photo in for dating & only one reply has come through for the early 1930's.

Sorry date/place of marriage unknown & date of death in also unknown.

Many thanks for everybodys help.....time to go back to bed, alarm goes off in 2 hours!

Elton

Jack Stephens also in Cornwall known as John. For some strange reason John and Jack are interchanged in Cornwall. Jack was called John by my Father who was both his son in law as well as his cousin.

Jack/John emigrated to New Zealand after the first world war. He was sponsored by a former resident of St Columb Major who invited him over to New Zealand to train as a gents barber. He was a gents hairdresser for the rest of his life.

He died in St Michaels Hospital Hayle Cornwall on 1st April 1984 and is buried in Truro.

He married my grandmother Adeline Emily McIntosh in 1923 in Auckland New Zealand.

They had two children :

Dorothy Iris Rounsevell (nee Stephens) 13.02.1924 (My Mother).

Douglas John Stephens

In 1948 my mother came to the uk on a trip to meet her grand mother and cousins. Over the course of the visit she met my father and did not return to NZ.

In 1950 Jack /John and Adeline visited this country for a trip and stayed both at St Columb and at Goviley Vean Tregony where John's mother lived. She lived there from 1912 until her death in the early 1950's. Her Sister Elizabeth my grandmother died in 1912 aged 42 leaving my father and other siblings without a mother.

In 1953 John and Adeline returned to the UK where they settled for the remainder of their lives.

As a footnote Elizabeth also had at least two children out of wedlock (Fred Stephens and Annie who was born in the Channel Islands according to the 1901 census.

Hi - Just came across your message.  I have been researching the Salter family in Hayle at around that time.  there ws only one Salter family in the area which had been founded by Job Salter born Draycot Cerne, he ws a private in the Wiltshire Militia, he married Mary harry in 1799 when he was stationed in redruth.  Their son Job Salter born in 1799 became an Engineer at Copperhouse Hayle, his son also Job Salter was born in 1825, they had a son thomas James Harris Salter who was a mate in the royal Navy, I cant find him past the census in 1881 but I know from his naval records that he served until 1887, could he be a potential father for your John salter Stephens.  as I mentioned these Salters were the only ones in Hayle at that time.  I have accounted for the rest of the Salter clan .  His naval records say that he ws married but I have never found a wife for him or marriage record or any trace of him past 1887 but that is not to say he wasn't in the area past that date. A whole bunch of other Slaters were, anyway I would be interested in your thoughts on the matter.
