A Cornishman went a travelling......
« on: Monday 21 July 08 17:18 BST (UK) »
Hello

Has anybody know how I can trace when my grandmothers cousin Jack Stephens travelled to NZ. The only clue is that he married in the 1920's (date unknown) but the photo was taken in the UK (Newmarket) but then a little I have a family portrait from the Belwood Studios Auckland NZ.

I have a later clue that he travelled back to England & then back to NZ via Australia with his wife Adeline Emily on the P & O ship Strathaird, out of London, in 1950.

Many thanks
Elton

Hi Elton

You could start here:
http://www.findmypast.com/home.jsp

They have passenger lists for 1890-1960.
The index is free to search.

Sorry a little confused,

You only want the year of the first voyage ?

So you know where and when he died and where he married, etc

The 1950 trip was Southampton to New York ?

He was born 1907 ?

Hi all

Jack was born 1897 in St Columb Cornwall & shown as Jack on his birth index/1901 census.  The index gives his middle name as Salter. His mother according to my late grandmother (her aunt) was never married.

I am persuming he sailed out of London on the Strathaird to Sydney with his wife Adeline Emily - occupation Hairdresser - last known address Gorley Veum Tregoney Truro Cornwall. Country of intended future permanent residence given as NZ. I am saying persuming as I can't be 100% be sure if this the 1897 Jack - although his age is given as 53 & middle name is shown as Salter (both as per birth index).

I have the family photo in for dating & only one reply has come through for the early 1930's.

Sorry date/place of marriage unknown & date of death in also unknown.

Many thanks for everybodys help.....time to go back to bed, alarm goes off in 2 hours!

Hi Elton,

Welcome to RootsChat  ;D

Baptism lists John

John Salter STEPHENS was baptised 5 July 1901 St Columb Major Mother Jane Stephens single woman of Union Hill

Henry STEPHENS was baptised 12 June 1904 St Columb Major Mother Jane Stephens single woman of Union Hill

Looks like both boys were a few years old at baptism.

Cheers Kris  :D
