An Update, A Thankyou & a Question
« on: Monday 21 July 08 03:10 BST (UK) »
Hello again all,

Just a quick update to fill you in on my progress.
A few months back I posted a question to get me started on my family tree & was overwhelmed with all the fast responses.
We were amazed at the generosity of the people here on Rootschat that went out of their way to get us started.
Well our tree has grown many new branches I think we have over 400 names now, & have learnt so much.
A huge thankyou to you all !!
My question (if I can ask another one  :) ) is about the ship Miltiades from Britain to Victoria Australia in 1852..... is there a story of this voyage anywhere that anyone knows of?
I have searched & dont seem to be able to find much about it at all.

Thankyou again for all your help

I don't know about a story? but here is a picture but I can't seem to link the url...very long and I have shrunk it but ..no luck.  Just google "ship Miltiades"

Not much about this ship at all...there were a number of ships of the same name - another was built in 1871 and another built in 1903.

Doesn't help you all that much, but from the archives of the New York Times...mention of a trip from Melbourne in November 1952

Once of my ancestors came out on the Constance in 1852 and there is a book about that particular voyage.

Thanks for that link Cando (your wonderful on here!)
I may be chasing the impossible but have read quite a few stories or diaries of other ships & voyages & was hoping there may have been similar on the Miltiades.
I have gone back to Roderick & Christina, trying to work out where they went & what they did when they arrived here in 1852.
Do you all ever get a completed story on your family histories?

Hi shaz,

Speaking for myself, I don't ever get a completed family story.  It's like climbing a mountain - you think you are reaching the top, but see another ridge in front of you!  There are always more things you would like to know - some major brick walls, some really little things like WHY did they emigrate or do something else - maybe you'll never know that!  Then there is finding out about the social and political conditions in which they lived their lives.  And you always want to push it back another generation - maybe you can, maybe you can't!

At some stage you need to tell yourself that it is time to stop searching and start writing.  That is what I am wrestling with at the present!

Found some more pictures of the Miltiades...I don't know if the original is amongst them...there are a couple of early ships under sail :-\

http://www.rootschat.com/links/03wd/

I often think that I have gone as far as I can with my family history and another little piece will emerge.  This week the Wirral Archives advised me of the location of my ggg grandmother's grave.....and within a few hours a very kind chatter had located the grave and photographed it...you can imagine my delight when I checked the thread....after I had thanked all who had been searching records for me in Birkenhead and there were two photos of the headstone.  I was quite emotional  ;D  So to answer you question Shaz04,  no I don't think I will ever have a completed family history.

MarieC like you I am wrestling with trying to organise all the info I have to present it in an interesting way.  I don't want it to read like a genealogy report that is generated by my family history programme....    One day...... ;D ;D

Cheers

Hi Marie,

Your right! It is like climbing a mountain, Im certainly finding that out.
I get so excited when I find something..... I just want to find more!!
It seems the Roderick Gillies Im chasing emigrated here in 1852 due to the Highland Clearances.
He had some acres in Fearn Scotland & packed up his family & came to Australia at aged 52.
Now I need to find out what happened inbetween then & 1879.
Its all very addictive fun & frustrating  :)

Cando, thankyou for the links to the Miltiades Ship, Im not sure which the original would be either, theres a few dates on the pictures so I'll keep plodding along with it.

Great news you have added a little more to your history Cando with your ggg g'mothers grave, ppl certainly are amazing on here  :)

Hi shaz,

I'm sorry to tell you you are now terminally addicted like the rest of us - and there is no cure!  ;D  You will spend the rest of your life working on your family history!  ;D

Why don't you make a separate post on this board setting out what you know about your Roderick Gillies - where he came to in 1852, where he was in 1879, and what you need to know.  Then all the super-keen Aussie Rootschatters can see if they can help!
