BAYNES family at Chrishall Grange in 1861 and 1871 Census
« on: Monday 24 January 05 15:52 GMT (UK) »
Could SKS please have a look for me for the BAYNES/BAINES family in either the 1861 or 1871 Census.  I believe Alfred Baines left the family home in Radwinter after he married in the 1850's there and moved to a dwelling on the Chrishall Grange estate, Chrishall.  He is certainly there in the 1881 Census with an expanding family, but I do not have access to the 1861 or 1871 Censuses.
Thank you, in hopeful anticipation,
Keith

So sorry!  An EXPANDING family - they may indeed have been individually free with their hard-earned money, but that wasn't the impression I was trying to give.

Hi again, Nicky,
Thanks so much for this.  You've obviously had that large, mobile magnifying glass poring over the records for me!

Thanks Suepip,
It's good to see it set out nice and clearly!  When I was straining my eyes to read the dreadful enumerator's script on those microfilms of the 1841 and 1851 Censuses of Radwinter at the FRC on a fleeting visit, I had trouble making the names out properly.  Though I seem to remember that the worst transcription of all was the 1861 one.  So I'm still not sure where Alfred Baynes and his newly-begun family were in 1861.  An indication from the 1871 Census that Nicky looked up for me was that it might have been Duxford, just across the county  border in Cambridgeshire.
Alfred's brother Arthur moved to Ickleton, the next parish to Duxford, also in Cambs, so different-named  birthplaces to confuse us all; but basically all in the same small area of East Anglia.
Best wishes,
Keith

Hi again, Frances,
Thanks SO much for these nuggets of information.  That links things up perfectly for the Baynes family.  Do hope your own family research is going well - I see that there is someone else on the list who is communicating with you about that family in London we have a common interest in.
