Business Oxford Road?
« on: Saturday 19 July 08 19:02 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me if there was a business at 223 Oxford Road Chorlton on Medlock, and if so what it was? My gggrandfather was living there on the 1841 census, just listed as salesaman. His father is listed on his marriage cert as manager, what they sold or managed is a mystery!

Hi,

Could that be Oxford Street, Chorlton on Medlock

In 1848, the occupier was
Henry William Pickering,     Pianoforte Tuner

If I am totally wrong ( again  ;D), Could you give us your gggrandfathers name, it may help in looking up directories.

Dave

Hi Bursy, thanks for the quick response, I have Oxford Rd, but don't have my original data to hand at the moment to check.
He was William Walker born 1813, variously Otley or Birkenshaw, Yorkshire.
Thanks, this family is very sketchy right upto the 1930's

Not very helpful but in 1891 and 1901,  334 Oxford Street, was a butcher's shop belonging to my g.g.uncle. If the even numbers were one side of the street and the odd numbers on the other, the chances are 223 was nearly opposite 334, and was probably a shop of some kind.

Thanks for your replies, in 1851 I have him in Irk St with Tamar, who may or may not have been his wife, in 1861 he is with his wife Elizabeth and family in Copperass St. I think he left his father Joseph in Yorkshire. He had a stall on Smithfield Market and then later a drapers shop at 310 Oxford St. I have no idea why he left Yorkshire or what the family did.
I have found the family on the censuses, and most BMD certs, but I never think that is enough, and try to find more info, and I have them in some trade directories. I also know that his wife's father William Wall was a hairdresser on Liverpool Rd in the 1830's but nothing else.
I suppose I'll ever really know what happened but the fun is in the trying ;D

If I am totally wrong ( again  ;D)

Not at all Dave  ;D ;D ;D

It looks like Oxford Road, Chorlton-on-Medlock, became Oxford Street around 1845 - just to confuse rootschatters of the future and for No Other Reason  :).

The 1848 maps refer to Oxford St, Saint Peters and Oxford St, Chorlton on Medlock - but named buildings on Oxford St C-on-M include 'Oxford Road Rectifying Distillery', Oxford Rd twist company and of course, Oxford Road Station , still there today.

I think (but now I could be wrong) that the Saint Peter's/Chorlton 0n Medlock boundary is the River Medlock itself.  So number one Oxford Street C-on-M would be where the road goes over the river, on the left hand side if you are going south from M/cr centre.

 :) Barbara
