Hello Kathy
In 1861 Joseph and Charlotte Kendall are with their son William aged 6 living at Back Street, Spittlegate, which is near Hornsbys and St Johns. His occupation is given as 'Groom', so links with 1851 when he is an Ostler, living in North Terrace (was this North Parade perhaps?) and Charlotte in service at Mount Pleasant with the widow of a Mr Wagstaffe, a vicar of St Wulframs.
In 1871 they are living just outside Norwich, which confirmed that Wm V Kendall was a chorister at Norwich Cathedral (I have photos.) They returned to Grantham by 1881 and were living at 6 Garden Cottages which I think is part of Welby St.  However on Wm's birth certificate 1855 at Wharf Road (maybe they did not live there) Joseph is said to be beer retailer.  On their marriage certificate 1854 at St Wulframs he is said to be Innkeeper, By then he was cowkeeper and finally milk business, and the cows were on Halls Hill according to my gt Uncle Tank.  Perhaps it is not possible to find much more.
To make matters worse a Sarah Ann Clarke (née  Kendall) is married to John Clarke at Durham Ox, 64 Wharf Rd, later of 33 Norton St and their son John Clarke was best man at my grandad Kendall's wedding 1906 and always said to be his cousin. (could have been second cousin perhaps).

Hello Kathy
Could you see whether a Walter Gibson Kendall, son of Joseph & Charlotte, was baptised at St Wulfram please?  Born 1 Oct 1856.  (Died Jan 1860.) This may give us an address.  Also is William Vincent baptised there born 6th Jan1855?
Thank you
Graham

Thank you once more Kathy for your diligent research.  Most interesting that Joseph Kendall is shown as Trade Moulder, though in Trade Directory he is Beer Retailer.  So this is my gt-grandfather's baptism, and my great-uncle who was a boy soldier and served in India (Arthur Edwin).  Strange my grandad's not there.  I would expect St Wulfram's Herbert Wm Kendall b. 13 March 1882, and his elder brother Walter Vincent Kendall b 1880 New Somerby.
Mystery about where in Wharf Road or Back Street was the beerhouse.
Trade Moulder makes me think it could be Hornsbys in 1854.
Best wishes
Graham

Hi Graham

I will have another look on Sat.for Walter Gibson/Walter Vincent and Herbert William Kendalls Baptisms.
I think you could be right about Joseph working at Hornsbys as a moulder its a bit different to a beer retailer but they did change jobs a lot in those days so anything is possible.
