Birth Record, 1840s - Ready family
« on: Sunday 13 July 08 08:14 BST (UK) »
I'm interested in the birth record for a Mary Ready, born circa 1841 in County Mayo, daughter of Thomas Ready. I'm hoping to find the town or birthplace. Thanks.

Civil registration of births in Ireland began 1864 so there will be no birth certificate. To get a baptismal record (if it exists) you need to know the family's religion and where they lived (parish if not actual townland not just county) and then see if the records exist for that period.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Ready is a variant of the surname Reidy. Luckily for you, neither name is very common in Co. Mayo. Suggest you check Griffith's Valuation for townlands where this surname appears in mid-1800s.

Hi moonmullins

I'm interested in the name Reidy, as I'm trying to find out what a 10 days old child called Ann Reidy was doing in a grave belonging to the Slattery/Fairey in Rochdale, Lancs.  The Irish born Slattery family moved to Rochdale after the death of head of the family Thomas Slattery in Atteryclass in 1874.

Maybe some of your Reidys also moved to Lancashire and little Ann was a descendant.

Hi it seems in those days because people were very poor, to put a young child in a grave with other people. I have one (found out this year) in with a gg granmother. It told me on the grave records. Mine was in 1909.

John

It was certainly not uncommon to put a child into a grave which was open for another burial at that time, however in the case of Ann Reidy the grave was specially opened for her burial, which would have incurred the cost of the sexton/gravedigger, also I would think that special permission would have had to obtained before opening up a grave.  Because of this I can only think that little Ann was the child of a relative or friend of the family buried there.
