Anyone have Garsington PR's please?
« on: Thursday 10 July 08 22:16 BST (UK) »

There is a bond (1731) for John Norris of Elsfield and Elizabeth Harper of Garsington.
Found on Oxford Marriage Transcripts, not IGI.
Did they marry in Garsington?
Were there any children?

Also found, wills for William Harper pr1795 and John Harper pr1801 both of Garsington.

I'm desperately trying to find some background to this couple.
Did they have a son, Henry? Henry married by bond in 1755 to Jane Godfrey.

Many thanks,
Lesanne.  :)

Is it possible Garsington is part of another Parish?  :-\

Hi Lesanne,

Garsington was a parish in it's own right. I've got the PRs on a Oxon FHS CD but I'm afraid I couldn't find the marriage of John Norris & Elizabeth Harper.

Elsfield PRs are on the same CD - but they didn't marry there either. I've found that a lot of couples seem to have taken themselves off to Oxford to marry, rather than doing it locally!  ::)

Better luck on their children. These are Elsfield baptisms:

Feb 27 1731/2 Mary Norris d/o John & Elizabeth (buried Apr 22 1732)
Dec 2 1733 Henry
Dec 26 1734 Elizabeth
Jan 30 1736/7 Sarah
Aug 13 1738 Anne
Jan 1741/2 Sarah

There's a gap in the burial PRs between 1736-43 so no record of the first Sarah's burial.

Garsington burials:

Sep 16 1795 William Harper age 60
Apr 20 1801 John Harper (no age given)

Let me know if you need anything else - there are lots of Harpers in the indexes for Garsington.

Wow Jill, Thank you so much for looking them up and replying. I'm so excited about this.
One step futher.... Wahoo.

Does it really have John Norris and Elizabeth nee Harper for Henry and sibs. Oooo I such much want him to be mine.....

I shall have to contact ORO to see if the Marriage license and bond is there. That should tell where they married. Possibly fathers as well. Grinning from ear to ear.  ;D

Is there anything for Elizabeth? Bapt, parents? This could help indentify the marriage.

Thanks again Jill.

Best wishes,
Lesanne... still grinning  ;D

Hi Lesanne,

Glad you're grinning, but - just to hold you down a bit before you float away - it doesn't say 'Elizabeth nee Harper' on any of the baptism entries: just 'John & Elizabeth'.  ;)

As for Elizabeth Harper in Garsington - luck has run out, I'm afraid. There's millions of Harpers in Garsington (slight exaggeration!) but I can't find a baptism for an Elizabeth around the right time.

I'm wondering if this could be her in nearby Horspath (same CD) -

baptised 19 (month not given but falls Sept, Oct or Nov) 1706 Elizabeth Harper d/o William, yeoman.

;D ;D Thanks Jill for looking.... Is Horspath far?
I think its quite possible to see, as a William a bit later has a will, someone might be mentioned. I might get it if its online doc's.

Hmmm.... Is there a William in Garsington? They might be sibs, bapt in different church..
I cannot find one Garsington entry IGI.. Not indexed yet...  :P
I do appreciate your time looking. Thank you.

Typical, that when I go to Oxford end of Oct, the Records Office is closed...Argh. ::)

If I can find anyplace that would sell the cd's, perhaps I could get one. Maybe, find the villages around and abouts. How much is taxi for the day... ;D  ;D

According to the map, Garsington is about 2/3 miles from Horspath.

The 1795 will could be Elizabeth's brother, as there is a baptism in Horspath :

March 15 1701/2 William Harper s/o William, yeoman.

Other siblings of Elizabeth in Horspath:

Thomas May 9 1703
Mary Jan 28 1704/5
Ann Jan 18 1709/10 (this entry has 'd/o William & Jane)

but he would have been in his 90s when he died - and the burial I found has him as age 60, so born about 1735. There's a William Harper baptised in Garsington 1734, but he's the son of Thomas (possibly the above Thomas baptised 1703?).

:) Thank you for all this time, looking up this family.

Maybe they started in Horspath and moved to Garsington by the time of marriage 1731. It gives me an idea where to look for Elizabeth's record when I get if I get to ORO.
I do hope John Norris stays put in Elsfield... There is no IGI on that parish either.

You would think if her dad is a yeoman, he would have a will....  :-\

Many thanks again Jill.

You can purchase Parish Register transripts on CD from Oxfordshire Family History Society at
http://www.ofhs.org.uk/CDsales.html#prs
Scroll down to bottom of page.
They cost £17.50 per CD and most contain 5 to 10 different parishes.  Fantastic value.
