Fife Family look up please
« on: Thursday 10 July 08 22:14 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I'm stumped with my 3xgtgrandparents, Daniel ROBERTSON and his wife Catherine McKISAIK (various spellings)
I have their marriage in Comrie, Perth 3rd May 1788.

I don't have a birth for either of them, but there are several possibles for Daniel--
21st March 1772, Perth to Daniel ROBERTSON and Helen GALL/GAAL
21st Dec 1760, Perth to Charles ROBERTSON and Sarah MACDONALD
27th Feb 1769, Fowlis Wester to Daniel ROBERTSON and Catherine SIM/SYM

For Catherine there are 2 possibles:

26 Aug 1762 Comrie to John McKISAIK and Christian McBEATH
21 May 1759, Comrie to Patrick McKISAICK and Catherine DRUMMOND

They had 6 children:
Peter b1791 Newburgh
Charlotte Rebecca Ruthven (Robertson) b1793 Markinch
James 1795 Markinch
Alexander 1797 Markinch (my 2xgtgrandfather)
Kathrine 1801 Markinch
Mary Ann Melvil (Robertson) 1805, Monimail

From the naming of 2 of their daughters, it would seem they have a connection to Lord Ruthven of Melville House, Fife.
On his son's DC Daniel is a Gardener.

On the 1841 census there is a Daniel ROBERTSON aged 70 in Colinsburgh, an Ag.Lab.
On the 1851 there is a Daniel living with his grangdaughter, Jane RUE and 2 children. Age 84 and a forester, still Colinsburgh. I have traced Jane as Jane RAE, mother Christian ROBERTSON. As my  Daniel , as far as I know, did not have a daughter Christian, I don't think he is mine.

On the Fife burials I have found Daniel ROBERTSON b 1766 died 18 May 1852 at Colinsburgh, no more details.

Nothing more on Catherine.

I know it's a long shot but I would appreciate it if anyone can be of any help at all ,in looking up burials and MIs etc. for any information, however small to verify my gt.gt.gt.grandparents.
Would there be any records from Melville house if he worked there? ie apprentice records or...??

I would be really grateful if someone could help in any way at all.

Thanks,     Sheilah

Hi, can't find anything obvious on Fife death CD or in MI's for the NE fife parishes. loads of Robertsons  no McKisaik - even with variations.
Could try this site i found:

www.scotsfind.org/robertson

Diddy
Cooks -(Clackmannanshire); Erskines - (fife); Youngs - (Dunfermline); Charltons - (Tyneside ); Skillings - (N.Norfolk); Legg - (N.Yorks, Tyneside) ; Carter - (Durham); Miller -(suffolk); Pattinson -(Lincs)

Hi Diddy,

Thanks for trying! I'd already been on the Scotsfind site and found nothing there either, for Fife or Perth.

I gave so much info. hoping it might help identify them if any burials were found. The nearest I have from the Fife FHS site is the Colinsburgh death for Daniel in 1852, but it gives no info. It seems to be the most likely, but I can't just claim someone else's grandad!

Thanks again,        Sheilah

Hi there,

I can help a little bit with Peter's baptism in Newburgh, and Charlotte's in Markinch.   They are too big to attach, so I will PM them.

I was looking at them, as I have Leonard Robertson and Susan McGlashan popping up in Markinch from I don't know where, having dau.s Ann and Betty there in 1787 and 1790.  I suspect they were from Perth, their names are!  I'm stuck on them.  I was hoping that perhaps Daniel having a child there about the same time and seemingly from Perth also would help me out, but I'm just as stuck as before! ;D

It is possible that Daniel and Leonard just did not have baptisms recorded, which is a scary thought isn't it!

Regards, Stephanie

Hi Stephanie,

Just seen this new reply to my post re Robertsons. I've not got much further with them! :-\ Seem to be very few records for them. You say you have some baptism records for Peter and Charlotte...sounds very interesting.

I've just taken up with my Robertsons again after following several dead ends on another branch. Let me know which Robertsons you are researching, could be a link..

Regards

Sheilah

Hi Sheilah

I am at work so have not had a good look but I found this on IGI doing a parent search using Daniel Robertson (father) and mother (Catherine ) no other details.

MARY ANN MELVIL ROBERTSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 24 NOV 1805 Monimail, Fife, Scotland
Parents:
  Father:  DANIEL ROBERTSON  Family
  Mother:  KATHARINE ISAAC

P.S.
Trouble with doing things in a rush without checking first.
re the above the issac surname is popular around the Comrie Muthil area's of Perthshire,
I did not notice you had the above christening.

Hello BruceL,
Yes, I well know the effects of doing things in a hurry!

Mary Ann Melvil was, as far as I can work out, the last of the 6 children born to Daniel Robertson and Catherine.

Catherine, well, an enigma if ever there was! I have her surname on various documents..children's BCs, marriage.. with so many variations. The IGI seems very fussy about turning up variations on this name (although not on any other names I have researched) and seems to require the exact spelling before it turns up all variations of McIsaac.  I have found the following variations, as well as just plain Isaac.

McIsaac    McKisack    McKiasack     McKiasach    McKiasaick     McKisaick   McKiasaich   McKisaich  McIsaack

I would welcome any help at all in trying to trace these Robertsons and McIsaacs. I know they came from Perth and travelled to Fife , and that Catherine is most likely also a Drummond. There seem to be very few people I have come across researching Perth!

Warmest wishes,

Sheilah

My own ancestors are Wm McIsaac 1769-1819 plumber & burgess of Glasgow who married Ann Durie 1771-1817 and their son James McIsaac 1802-49 soap manufacturer Glasgow

Wm is said to have been the son of James McIsaac of Comrie.but I have no proof whatsoever of this
Any connections known ?

HI cornes

I have spent many hours looking at the OPR's for Comrie in the AK Bell library and the period you are looking at the records are not in a good condition.
The sample attached is one of the better ones.
