we know a fair bit about Robert Austin Thomson, plus much is documented due to his football status. However we are having great trouble trying to locate the burial place of his wife Susan, and his father John Thomson. Berties dad is not buried in the family grave alongside himself and his mother and other members of the Austin family, so its a mystery thus far....As is the life of Susan after Bertie??

we literally have no knowledge of her as our grandmother was raised elsewhere...but her and her husband our G grandfather had been having a rough time when he died on our nans 3rd birthday in 1937..one can only guess things went south for her after that

The 1940 death cert should provide you with some details that might give you more background. Worth viewing on SP if you haven't yet.

I did see some references to Robert and Susan having problems in their personal life. Bertie's demons were well recorded weren't they. Sad  :-\

With an exact date of death for Susan, you could check Glasgow papers to see if a death notice is there to be found? Might give some details on burial location.

S.P is down at the mo, so I will hopefully get a look next week...we would love to pay our respects to susan so need to get the death cert and see if we can locate her grave. We visit Berties grave in elderslie once a year...its still in great condition...the ground however is far worse off! sadly Berties career and life ended so soon due to consumption I wonder if the same was susans fate?

I thought Bertie died of heart failure? Also it is thought that alcohol had a big impact on his health in those last years of his life.

From the book Celtic: Pride and Passion by Jim Craig, Pat Woods (see here from google books www.rootschat.com/links/01owj/)

Have a read through that section as there are some details there re Bertie and his last years that may give you additional info.

There is a burial entry showing on SP in 1940 for a Susan Thomson, aged 20 (this must be an error given the death registration showing her as aged 30?).

2/4/1940
Lair
Glasgow, St Peter's Dalbeth Cemetery

We had this from earlier. You could make enquiries to see if this is where Susan was buried. I think the burial index has an error re her age and this entry should correspond to the death we have in 1940 for a Susan Conway Thomson, aged 30.

There is a contact number you could try to see whether they can help you further with burials at Dalbeth. Let me try to find now.

St. Peter's Dalbeth Roman Catholic Cemetery, unlike St. Kentigern's Cemetery, is still the responsibility of the Archdiocese of Glasgow.  For burial records after 1955 and for information on earlier lair registers, you should contact Sharon Scullion at Archdiocese of Glasgow, 196 Clyde Street, Glasgow G1 4JY Phone: 0141 226 5898.
www.glasgowfamilyhistory.org.uk/ExploreRecords/Pages/Burial-Lair-and-Cremation-Registers.aspx

Not sure if Sharon Scullion is still in this role but hopefully she or someone else would be able to help you further.
