Search party needed please
« on: Tuesday 08 July 08 22:12 BST (UK) »
Can anyone find Elijah Speck b 1842 Westbury on Severn with Wife(?) Emma b 1832 Gloucester Gloucester (she may also be under the name of Emma Burton) and their two children Emma Speck b 1865 St Mary de Lode, Gloucester and Kate Speck 1869 Gloucester, Gloucester.

I can find the parents in 1861 both unmarried as servants in the organ household Elijah is a brewer and Emma burton is a house servant,

I can find them in 1881 when Emma  Burton is now married to Henry Evans with the children listed as step children and I can trace them all from there till their deaths Elijah 1895 and Emma Evans 1891. I even know what happened to the children later

What I can't find is where they are in 1871. I don't know if they were living together although on the children's birth certificate Emma lists herself as Speck formally Burton. I also can't find a marriage for them.

Please can you help.

Elijah Speck was still alive in 1891, shown as a Widower and living with his sister-in-law Jemima Speck described as a Widow. That is at Westbury.

His death is recorded only in 1895 as you say.

Hello Hack, how the devil are you?  :D

Ambertoo, they are hiding!  Not in England or Wales after a quick look.

What other info do you have from the birth certs - an occupation for Elijah perhaps?

What does Emma's marriage cert say - is she a "widow"?

Do you have the girls' marriage certs & do they say anything about their father?  Witnesses might also help.

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi Arranroots

We mustn't hijack Ambertoo's thread but I am now well again, thanks.

Ambertoo I have even searched for Elijah with any surname b. Westbury-on-Severn 1840-1844 - no one pops up.

Hi Guys,

Feel free to hijack. always ready for a gossip! Thanks for the help.

I have Elijah down in 1865 as a jobbing Labourer address Half street  St mary de lode Glouceser.  so I started there. I only have Emma's birth certificate so far. I went back to the pub from 1861  and found Mr Organ still there but with a whole new staff.

Kate married William Bowers Card in Steyning, Sussex in 1891 and Emma married William Blackwell in Gloucester 1884 dec qtr. Both stay in those areas to 1901 and beyond but I have no idea how Kate got to Sussex. I haven't got the marriage certificates for them.

I can't find any marriage for Elijah let alone the one to Emma but Hey Presto they all pop up in Gloucestershire again in 1881. Where could they be? Emma Burtons Dad William  was a boat builder could they be on the canals?

I'm glad its not just me that can't find them. I thought I was just not seeing them.
