Elsecar Birth Registration please
« on: Sunday 06 July 08 09:05 BST (UK) »
Hi

An ancestor of mine was born Elsecar 1885, but by 1890 the family were living at Wath upon Dearne when the next child was born. Where would the Elsecar birth be most likely registered please, Barnsley or Rotherham?

always worth trying Google ...

"ELSECAR, in the township of Brampton Bierlow, and parish of Wath upon Dearne, upper-division of Strafforth and Tickhill; 5¼ miles SSE. of Barnsley, 6¾ from Rotherham, 10 from Sheffield."

So it should be ROTHERHAM Regn Dist (up to 1938)

Hi Newfster

Thanks for your reply. So it is Rotherham, although Barnsley is nearer by a mile and a half? Interesting.  :)

Hi Newfster

Yes I did find a Joseph Ward 1885 Rotherham also a Joseph Edward, Barnsley. I thnk it is more likely to be the Joseph Rotherham. What I was checking for was to see if Joseph's middle name was possibly Lambert. I have had a posting before re Joseph who just disappeared and people were so kind to try and find him for me after 1891. The lodger who was staying with his family in 1901 was Joseph Lambert, same age and birth place ie Elsecar. He was listed after the parents, then the rest of their children then a boarder last. I know it doesn't always follow but usually the family come first, but I am happy to be corrected on this. I was just googling to see if Wath on Dearne parish records were on line to see if I could find a death for him. The problem is Joseph Ward is such a common name in Yorkshire to know whether I would have the correct one to eventually send for his death certificate.

I am almost sure it would be registered in Barnsley. All the births I have come accross for Elsecar were registered in Barnsley.

Hi

I found Joseph Edward in 1901 registration district Barnsley, so this Joseph wasn't mine. Come on Joseph where are you? Thanks for your help.

Hi

Just to add to the confusion, I was born in Elsecar in 1949 (bit later I know) and the registration district was STAINCROSS.
