I need help to tryand find birth details of Isabella Hogg.
Said to have been born Mickley 1877.

No father details seem to have been recorded, her mother is believed to be Ellen or Eleanor Hogg.

When you say that no father's details have been recorded, are you referring to the birth certificate? I have checked the 1881 census and there is a 4 year old Isabella Hogg living in Eltringham Colliery whose birth place is given as Mickley. She is living with what would appear to be her mother - Mary J Hogg, age 23, unmarried, outdoor work (ag lab), born Scotland - and her grandmother - Mary A Hogg, age 50, widow, outdoor worker, born in Birtley, Northumberland.

Mickley would then have been in Hexham Registration District and there is a birth recorded in the September 1876 quarter in Hexham under reference 10b 294. This would put Isabella's birth at 4 at the time of the census and consistent with the above information. The fact that her mother was unmarried will probably reveal that no father's name was recorded on the birth certificate but you will need to order the certificate to find that out for sure.

Hi CB,

The 1891 census (will give you full details if you don't already have them) gives Isabella as step-daughter of Robert Johnson wife Ellen, is that where you got Ellen's name from?  In that case, maybe the Mary in 1881 is her aunt, and her mother is away from home

Will have a look for her

Have just looked at the 1881, and daughter Ellen is actually there with her mother Mary A. Hogg, she's over the page, married, with husband Andrew Grant!

her marriage reg:  Dec 1880 Hexham    10b   410
 GRANT    Andrew        HOGG   Ellen

She must then have married Robert Johnson.  The possibility is that either Mary J or Ellen was Isabella's mother, both would be single at the time of Isabella's birth, but it seems more likely that it was Ellen as Isabella is Robert's stepdaughter on the 1891 census

Will post full census details shortly

1861 census has her as Eleanor and there's another daughter Margaret

1861  RG9  Piece 3815  Folio  135  Page  25
28½ Bath Terrace, Elswick, Newcastle
Nathaniel Hogg    head m 44 Labourer   Ireland
Mary A Hogg       wife  m 33                  Birtley
Margaret Hogg     dau     10  Scholar     Gateshead
Mary J Hogg          "         3                   Scotland
Eleanor Hogg          "         1                   Newcastle
Jane Moor     visitor  w 40                   Ireland

Margaret married James Pemberton  Jun 1866 Newcastle upon Tyne    10b   157

They also had a daughter called Isabella, born Jun qu 1878 - that must have been a bit confusing for the family!

Thank you very much Barbara, i am sure this is the correct family but i will now obtain Isabellas birth cert to confirm Ellen as the mother. If so then i have a large amount of information to develop.

Regards,
Chris

Hi Chris,

Please would you come back and post what you find from the cert?  It's always nice to know if the information was right or if we need to start again  :)
