I think what I was trying to indicate to mshrmh was that you can lose a lot by taking a particular stance on this. If I'd not been open about my ancestors on other sites in the 'olden days' I would not have had a wealth of letters, documents, stories  and photographs (sent willingly by cousins without any need for 'buddy-buddy' contact)  which has helped me understand my family history and go even further back.

Because of their kindness in sharing our joint history, I've passed on what I've found to other relatives.

I still miss a 4th cousin from New Jersey who I met a few years ago via another cousin. We spent ages trying to find info on our common ancestors and shared lots. Sadly he died last year.

Me too

I have a couple of copies of photos of various ancestors sent me by a couple of contacts that I would otherwise never have seen and one of them I have been able to pass on to a second cousin of mine who is also a descendent.  Made her day too  ;D

It's worth doing and it's worked out great for me.......my OH has an unusual name in his family tree - Kinvig. I found a statistic somewhere that in the year 2002 and there were only 293 in the United Kingdom (excluding Ireland and Scotland).

I have been contacted three times on RC about the Kinvig name and all three times is was a connection. I have also been contacted twice about another name I have on the SIT and both times it was a family member.

I have actually learnt more from Sue than any of my 64 1st cousin's ::)
or any other family member
and I respect anyone's wishes not to put their names on the SIT but
I hope if any  rootschatters who dont put their names on share my interest they will
get in touch  :)

I agree that it's up to each person to decide whether to put their names on SIT, but if you don't put them there you may miss out on valuable information!  While I haven't yet been helped by the SIT (or Lost Cousins), I have been enormously helped by distant rellies I've found, or who have found me!  I live in hope of a valuable connection which may help to clear up my enduring mysteries!

Elaine,

I will certainly jump right in with that one and ask about your McCluskeys.  ;D I'll send you a PM.

I'd be interested to know how many Rootschatters have actually found rellies through the SIT. Probably lots.

MarieC

I haven't found any rellies but thats because i don't always Contact Jones in just Cheshire.Cheshire is a big place My Jones originated from Wheelock Chester.B.4 moving on to Staffordshire forget where at the moment :-\ ;D so it would be helpful if members put where in Cheshire.I have contacted over time a few Jones in Cheshire but i have always had a reply that no my Jones came from wherever in Cheshire.Which is miles away from Chester where Grandad was born.I have also had replies with queries about all my surenames. So i know members do look in now and then,by the way it wasn't 3 i never found it was 4 the forth being Theoplus ;D

Celia

I have some Cheshire Jones myself, although mine are from Wallasey.
