Don't see the point - but its free ??? ???  Just spend a little time putting in a few names, checking every so often and maybe you come up with a connection.

Yes it is a maybe but the odds gets smaller (or it larger - never did understand betting? ::) ) the more names that are added into the table.

That's what makes rootschat a good site, you get help you can use the SIT, you can help others and unlike all the rest of the sites out there it doesn't cost a penny  :D

how sad people can't be bothered  :(
and what's the point  ???
if Sueky71 hadn't been bothered to put her names on there
I would never had made contact
and would have lost out on finding a new relative and friend  :)
thanks Sue

I thought people came on here to make connections and get help, etc.

I'm sure some people do, but we're not all the same on RootsChat anymore than in any other area of life.

My reason for not putting up surname interests is quite simple - it is the same as that for not joining Genes Reunited - I'm not seeking new living relatives (got plenty I do know), I'm more interested in researching the past.

I have found in finding new relatives I learn an awful lot about my ancestors, gain stories I never would have had, get pictures of ancestors. I have been able to take my research back several generations with the help of "new" relatives. And it's also fun to have someone as interested in my specific research as I am.

Me too Kath

It was recently through a new rootschatter who shares a family from Sussex with me that I cleared up some anomalies and discovered I was actually pursuing the wrong line.  If we hadn't started discussing the Payne family I would still be pursuing the wrong family and paying out money for certificates for them.  ::) ::)

I managed to trace, or be traced by, a very high percentage of collateral relatives before i joined this site.

However, I still entered my main surnames. Even if you don't want to know or become friendly with you living relatives, you can share information and help them.  You might even find out more about you personal Family History from them.

I really posted to indicate that there are other reasons not to post on the SIT other than "can't be bothered" and that similarly we don't all join RootsChat for the same reason. I'm not trying to stir up a hornet's nest, just to present a different view than that already expressed.

I've nothing against anyone taking a different view, we are thankfully free to do so here.

I don't think any feathers were ruffled either. I absolutely agree with you, we all have different reasons for doing things, and it is always great to see others' reasons for those choices. I learn a lot from them, things I never would have thought of or getting me to think outside the box. I certainly need all the help I can get.  ;D ;D And it would certainly be boring discussions if we all agreed.
