World War 2 Help !

Hi all Rootschaters

Can anyone help me trying to find my fathers regiment,
 snag is i know very little  about about his time in the army. 
 He  was stationed at a camp  near Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire in about 1944 until 1946 the camp was called Proteus 
                                                                                                             
I have rang Army Record,s Office and  they are sending me some papers to fill in and it will cost £30 I  have got everything to identify him with his birth cert and death cert but not regiment he was in  he was a batman to a colonial  if only i knew the colonial,s name ?
 that fine but is there anyone out there that can help me in any other way

If you can provide a service number then we can tell you which regiment he enlisted with (which may not be the one he stayed with)
