MATTHEWS in Cornwall
« on: Friday 04 July 08 05:04 BST (UK) »
Trying to discover any descendants in Cornwall of John Matthews (1761-1841) and his wife Jenefer (nee Tocker) - (1756 - 1817). Believe they came from the St.Hilary area.

Peter, Welcome to rootschat.
Sorry i don't have an answer for your descendants question but maybe it could help you eventually to get an answer if you put the names of those you seek on the Your Surname Interests board.  Go to the bottom of this page and clisk on the link.  Then very simple to add your names.

Good luck,
 charlotte

Hello Althea,
Many thanks for the info. What a pity that the marriage record didn't give us a few names - that may have answered many questions!! John is my g.g.g. grandfather. I believe there were other children - Jenefer, bp. Gwennap1797; William Tocker M. bp.1787 Gwinear; James born circa 1803; and maybe Samuel bp. 1802 Gwennap. One problem is that the same names reappear in each generation. I have been trying to find who John's parents were. Okay, he was bp. in St.Hilary in1761, but I haven't discovered any site which gives the parents names. I believe John died in St.Hilary in 1841, and Jenefer in Redruth in 1817.
The saga continues!!!
Many thanks,
Peter

Hi Peter
I was watching to see if they tied up with my MATTHEWS, but nothing yet..

Have you tracked each of the supposed children? their Banns are always hopeful and some marriages that may gie parents details

The William Tocker M obviously seems to fit, but means they were St Hilary 1785, Gwinear 1787, St Hilary 1789..not unusual for Matthews clan, like mine seem to go walkabout regulary :)

Hi Peter and Sue,

I see you both joined some time ago but have only just started posting, so, A Big Welcome to Rootschat and the Cornwall Board   ;D
We hope it will be a good experience for you both.

Thank you for your Lookup Offers Sue  ;D

Peter - The full record of the marriage would yield at least some witness names for you. The Phillmore's Transcript only tells us he was a husbandman. You could see if the opc has a copy of the original, or hire the film and view the entry yourself - available at a modest cost from your local LDS Family History Library, or, as you have the Parish and Date, you could purchase a copy of the entry from the CRO (lovely for the records)

Extracted Records

John MATHEWS was baptised 17 May 1761 St Hilary father William.

There are several other baptisms in St Hilary about this time listing parents as William and Hannah (Hannah 1749, Mary 1751, William 1754 and Peter 1757)

Don't see the marriage listed in St Hilary but there is this possible marriage

William MATTHEW = Hannah ROWE 31 Mar 1746 Gulval

Cheers Kris  :D
