Hi, I'm also researching the Aitkin/Aitken (Aikin/Akin/Aken) name in Cumberland, at this point I'm not sure mine were in Maryport or Workington though. Most of the information I have shows them in or from Dalston before moving to Gateshead. My earliest I have so far is John Aikin married Mary Skelton, their son Robert b. 1809ish married Ann Ruddick, and they are the family that moved to Gateshead.

Hi Lisa,
I dont reconize any of the names you mention, my Henry Aitkin  married Rebecca Gammon 1831 in Crosscanonby Cumberland, according to parish regs he was the son of Robert Aitkin b 1788 Bassenwaite and Eleanor Bell 1786, their other children were Ann 1806 and Jane 1816 there are possiably other children  and the names you have could be related, sorry im not much help, but if you would like to share your Aitkin/Aitken names I will gladly do the same, you never know what might come up.
Margaret nee Aitken :)

Hi, I wasn't sure there was any connection but since we are both searching the same surname, I thought I'd at least reply. I posted looking for more info on the Cumberland forum and got replies with 1841 & 1851 census info, it appears (as I suspected?) that John was born in SCT.
Here's my query from there, if any of it helps at all, never know......   ;)

Aikin-Aitkin family in Dalston - Dalston, Cumberland
Looking for any information on "my" Robert Aitkin christened 1809 Dalston,CUM and his wife Ann(e)(maiden possibly Ruddick)born Talkin (1851 census)children: Emma,born ca.1841 Newcastle,NBL; Marie born ca 184_ Gateshead,DUR;Robert born ca. 1847/8 Gateshead,DUR.;Jane E. born ca. 1850 Gateshead,DUR.
Robert was christened 12 Nov.1809 son of John Akin & Mary Skelton in Dalston. John & Mary were married 13 Nov. 1797 in Dalston, children: Jane chr. 17 Nov.1798; John chr.16 Nov.1800; William chr. 18 May 1806; Robert chr.12 Nov.1809, all Dalston. Would like to know if John was born in ENG. or perhaps SCT. any help much appreciated, thank you!

Thank you for the list, ya just never know....connections seem to sometimes show up out of nowhere  ;)  My John & Mary stayed in Dalston as far as I know, and he was a widower in the 1841 census, so she'd passed away by then and then he died sometime between the 1851-1861 censuses as he was no longer with his daughter Jane in 1861. So, I need to get busy and do some contacting so I can get more information on this family!!
Good luck with your research as well, take care, Lisa
