Prison details.
« on: Tuesday 01 July 08 15:42 BST (UK) »
Hello Roots folk,
I haven't been on-line for a while but I've got a question, and hope someone can help me.
Where can I found details of a relative of mine who on the 1881 Census is shown as a prisoner in H M Prison Kirkdale, Liverpool aged 25, born 1856 in Ireland.
Would I be able to find out the date he was sentenced, the crime, his release date and what happened to him after that?

Thanks.
Tony

There could be a report in the local paper, or even national ones if it was a particularly interesting case. Are you willing to give his name?

His name was Matthew Gittins, my mother's grandfather. His daughter, Mary Gittins, married James Dillon.  They were my mother's parents.
I know he married Sarah Ellen Lloyd in 1889.  I have his marriage cert and his death cert.

Are you signed up to the free trial of the Gale Newspaper site? http://access.gale.com/gdctrial/index.html

A search just on "Matthew Gittins" comes up with a court case reported in the Liverpool Mercury 8 June 1894 in which Matthew Gittins a coal heaver bought an action against his employer involing the tally system of payments - he was clearly a good union man and was succesful in his action - he may be your man?
It might be worth having a general search for Gittins as I'm sure the name may turn up in other editions of  the Liverpool Mercury.

The only reference is in the Liverpool Mercury etc (Liverpool, England), Friday, June 8, 1894; Issue 14487
LIVERPOOL COUNTY COURT: Matthew Gittins, a coal heaver, brought an action against J. Maginnis, stevedore, of Liverpool, to recover the sum of 2 shillings. I don't know if this is your Matthew.

Thanks Stan and Siamese Girl - it certainly sounds like him.  On his marriage certificate his occupation is coal heaver! I'd certainly like to know what his crime was, though, which was a few years before the bit in the newspaper.

Siamese Girl,

I've just logged onto the Gale Newspaper site for their free trial and it's asking for State, zip code and for an Institution name and address.  It's obviously American.  Can I still register in the UK?
Thanks,
Tony
