Owler Hall
« on: Tuesday 01 July 08 13:35 BST (UK) »
Does anybody have any information on Owler (or Awler ) Hall Tottington. I have a relative Ann Dearden who has this as her place of birth in 1854 but have been unable to find any record of the place. Her father is down as being a dyer which makes me unsure as to what sort of residence the hall was
Thank you

There were extensive calico printing works at Tottington Lower End in the 1850's (Whellan's Directory of Manchester & Salford, 1853 p992) - perhaps that's where he worked http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/index.asp

Hi,

I checked the 1851 and 61 census indexes for the place and the nearest one was in Bamford (Heap) and that was Owle(r) hole.  I wonder if it was somewhere in between Walshaw and Woolford.  There is an Owler Barrow there.   ???

Sorry,
Mo

Hi

Can it be Lightowler Hall?  a bit nearer Rochdale, but in the wilds ner there?  I think I've seen it written 'Towler for short.

I'll have a look in some of my old books.

Best wishes
