It is indeed a privilege.  And I don't want to fleece anyone, so I went right back to the Gale home page, looked again at the free trial feature - it can be accessed by anyone, not just academics and libraries, it seems.  I even read the terms & conditions etc and couldn't find anything that suggested signing up for the 'free trial' was in any way restricted; there is a 'request free trial'  link on practically every page.  I tried quite hard to find a 'catch', but haven't managed to so far.

Is access being abused? I'm not sure it is. As several Chatters have discovered, the 'password' and 'login' are the same for everyone. Seems to be the equivalent of applying for a library ticket. The database collection is massive, and  Gale/Cengage are a very big outfit.  http://www.cengage.com/   The online archives available in the free trial are a fraction of what they hold.  And some are free to view on other sites as well, like the College of Nursing journals.

I think making use of the free trial is the equivalent of using a freeview box to watch selected digital TV channels - if you want more channels  you sign up to whoever. Likewise here, if you want more databases, you take out a subcription.

 :) Barbara

Sorted out the problem with downloading PDFs, it was due to a new version of Firefox I had downloaded, defaulting to Mozilla, instead of Adobe.

I found an article from the 1860s in Leyland which mentioned my 3x great grandmother Agnes Banister, who was about 12 at the time. She did a solo in a concert at her school.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I have found a relative that was injured in a train crash, also a few obituaries.

One funny unrelated article was the marriage of an 18yr old male cork cutter. The "fair bride was the wrong side of half a century" The cheek of it. Lucky woman I say!!! ;)

Hi Scousemouse

I've just been in seconds ago - in fact I'm still in.

I used the link at the start of this post and filled in my email address and the sign oin name and pass word.

In fact I hac to drag my self away - I had a fielkd day, looking in the American papers.  Not only are there bmd's for relatives we may or may not know about, but there is one publication which regularly lists deaths etc for Irish Americans right across USA, with many funeral venues and some burials.

I'm sure you have, but the only thing I can think of is that is different from what I've just done is whether you yped the email correctly when you registered.

I hope you get in.
