Ellen McAuliffe....
« on: Saturday 28 June 08 15:07 BST (UK) »
Hello There.......

My Great Grandmother was Ellen McAuliffe, born c1866........

She stated on the 1891/1901 census, that she was born Middlesborough.

Over the years, I have searched and better searched, for her birth, or any sign of her on 1871/1881 census (England )

I have recently been told, that McAuliffe ( and various spellings !) is a Cork name, and that Middlesborough is Killoggan ?

Can anyone help please ? Ellens father was Morris . Again I have been told this is a Cork name. She possibly had a sister called Catherine, who was a witness at her wedding at York , in 1889........

Not much to go on, I know, but if some one can confirm that Middlesborough is the same place as Killoggan (Sic) it would be a start.......

Regards

Audrey.....

Thank you very much for that.

On Ellen's marriage certificate ( to Harry Harrison ) in 1889, there are three people with the name McAuliffe.....Ellen, her father, Morris, and a Catherine, who was a witness. All the surnames were spelt differently !!

Since I posted yesterday, I have found a Ellen McAuliffe, of about the correct age, with the father's name Maurice, mother Catherine, baptised in India !!

Roll on the 1911 census ........

Thanks again, will investigate further

Lara......

Thank you so much for your interest. I am no further forward ( or backwards) with the McAuliffe side of things, so any information , is very welcome......

I think I have seen this particular McAuliffe family, you mention, before. I will dig out my notes again, and have another go at them . Sometimes it helps, when you have had a break from a them, and your mind is refreshed......

Thank you once again....

Lara......

Just an update on my McAuliffe side of the family......

On The 1911 census, my Great Grandmother, still claims that she was born in Middleborough. Armed with this, I was determined to find her birth certificate.......and I have !!

I just entered the name Ellen, born 1865/1866 Middlesborough...there were hundreds, But I THINK, I have her as Eleen McRAUlife.....I have sent for the BC....will let you know how I get on....

I think there were other siblings Joann- 1862 / Catherine 1872 / Morris 1874 / James 1877.

All the surmanes were spelt differently. If I ma correct, their mother will be Catherine Stack.

Will be in touch , as promised I f I can confirm anything else.

Regards

JeannieR
