CLARIDGE & DENEHEY Surname Lookup Please

Hello,

I am researching my CLARIDGE and DENEHEY Ancestors and have hit a road block with a Marriage for William CLARIDGE and Mary Ann DENEHEY - my gg grandparents and also a birth for MaryAnn DENEHEY.  The details I do know are as follows.

William CLARIDGE
B: 25 August 1827, Little Rissington
Father: - Charles CLARIDGE
Mother: Charlotte PALMER

Mary Ann DENEHEY
B: ABT 1824 - location unknown
Father: - unknown
Mother: - unknown

William and Mary Ann married sometime between 1851 and 1855 as they are listed as married on the "Assisted Immigrants to Tasmania 1841 to 1889" Michrofiche at the Archives of Tasmania.  However, William is still listed as living with his family in the 1851 England Cenus and Mary Ann is not listed as a household member.

They arrived in Launceston, Tasmania in 1855 on the ship Raleigh - Mary Ann is listed as 31 and William is listed as 27.

Mary Ann may also have been known as Margaret as she is listed as Margaret in the Will of William in 1896.

The information I am requesting a look up for please is as follows -

1. Marriage date and place for William and Mary Ann
2. Birth Date and Parents Names for Mary Ann/Margaret DENEHEY

   I saw your message on the Rootsweb site and am in favour of the surname of Mary Ann being Dabney as there are Dabney's in Gloucestershire is the area you want.

Hi you probably have this one because of the reference to the Rootsweb site (not looked there though)

1852 William Claridge and Ann Dabney district Northleach Vol 6a pg 669.

Northleach is the same reg district as the 1851 census for William and there is an Ann Dabney living Sherborne, Glos.- reg district Northleach.

IGI has a baptism for Ann Dabney- parens John and Mary. Ann is Ann in 1841 census too.

If you are sure that William is yours (parents Charles and Charlotte) then this looks like him but the marriage certificate will confirm.

Thank you Heywood and Joburg,

I hadn't considered that Denehey could be incorrect as Mary Ann's surname.  Could it have been recorded so incorrectly?

Mary Ann Denehey is the recorded name on the birth certificate for Mary Ann and William's son Thomas North Claridge.  Was her accent so strong that they heard Denehey instead of Dabney?

I am very confused and not sure how I would go about verifying the name now? 

Any suggestions?

I think the first thing you must do is get the marriage certificate- if you are sure of William's parentage and place of birth then the certificate will confirm Mary Ann's name and give her father. Then you will be able to confirm what has already been found re Dabney.
If they were illiterate, then they would not be able to check the writing on the birth certificate of their child - again the marriage certificate would give some indication re this.
Often names do get changed for these reasons and it can be a bit of a shock - but get confirmation first.

I have just rechecked the marriage- the other possible spouses are Richard Stevens and Mary Ann Jackson. There is a possible Richard and Mary A in 1861 but, sorry to harp on about it, the certificate will confirm - if you have the right William and then his bride- then take it from there.

I am a direct descent of the couple you are searching for and have lots on the australian side they came out on the Raleigh and I have the ships picture he had a farm called North farm in Tasmania and called his son Thomas North I have been to visit NorthLeach and Farmington hope you get to read this post I have the coies of the certificates these I have received from others who have done extensive research hope this helps

William Claridge  m. Maryann Denehey (Port Sorell, Tas 1857)
  child - Thomas North
Thomas North Claridge  m. Elizabeth Pow  (Emu Bay, Tas. 1875)
 children -  10 children one being my Grandmother - Harriet Jane

Is this the same family?
