What Catholic church served the Kilmacahill, Ballinvally area in the 1840's? Are there records available online? Also, what events about 1854 would have caused a family to go to Canada? Wasn't the worst of the famine over by then?

Thanks for the insight into evictions. I hadn't thought of that. How would a family of 5 have enough money for passage? Why Canada and not the U.S.? Any thoughts?

Hello NRT,

Some Irish landlords offered free passage to their tenants and their families to emigrate to Canada or Australia. Many families availed of the offer as the only alternative was eviction.

I looked through old newspapers recently for Co. Wicklow, not at as far back as 1850 but in the late 1800 there were ads most weeks for 'free' land in Canada, about 100 acres per farm as far as I remember with quotes like no bad winters, easy farming etc. There were also ads for ships to Canada wit prices etc - but I dont remember the ports involved.
