Hi,
I'm trying to trace the family tree of a friend and am having trouble with one of the branches.
As far as she remembers it, her maternal grandmother's parents were Polish. She thinks she remembers them speaking with an accent and talking about 'back home', although she would have been quite young at the time.
I have the birth certificate for her grandmother, Albina Moore (born 1914), and her parents are shown as Herbert Moore and Julia Victoria Moore, formerly Bush. Not very Polish sounding names! I can't find any marriages for Herbert and Julia and believe me I have tried every combination I can think of.
My friend says that it is possible that these Polish ancestors were Romany and that there was a change of name somewhere, but thinks that this was to cover up a change of religion, rather than country.
Has anyone got any suggestions of what I can do next? Herbert Moore is too common a name to narrow down. I've found a Julia Victoria E Bush born in 1882 in Pancras and she apppears on the 1901 census as a servant in Walthamstow, but thats about as much as I have found. Without any marriage cert I'm not sure how much more I can do.
If they were Polish Romany would they even appear on censuses?
