George MIDDLETON born wilts. about 1814?
« on: Friday 27 June 08 08:48 BST (UK) »
Hi,
My relatives imegrated to South Australia in 1851 under the assisted passage program on the ship MARION.  On the ship's passenger list they are
listed as:

Given Name   Surename   Age    Occupation             Place of Birth

George           Middleton      37      Farm Laborour      Wiltshire
Anne  (ne Johnson)             32
Johnson                              13
Harriet                                 11
Joseph                                 9
George William                     7
Sarah                                   6
Alice                                     1

Any nformation on where in Whiltshire they lived and George and Anne's marriage or parents would be greatly appreciated
Thanks,

Welcome to RootsChat Jimmi  :)

This looks like the family (minus George) in 1841 - in Yorkshire rather than Wiltshire!

1841
HO107/1339/5 12 18
Thorne, Yorkshire
Back Street

Ann Middleton, 20 (=between 20 and 24), born in county
Johnson, 3, born in county
Harriet, 1, born in county

Unfortunately, the 1841 census doesn't show exact birth places. The 1851 census does but I have a feeling the family had already left (what date did their ship leave?)

Christenings (extracted IGI records, from www.familysearch.org)

Father GEORGE MIDDLETON Mother ANN

other possible children christened at the same church to parents George and Ann:

JOSEPH MIDDLETON 22 AUG 1841
RICHD. MIDDLETON 24 DEC 1848

as far as George William and Sarah are concerned, this could be them:

other christenings in the same church to a George and Ann Middleton:

This is lucky! George and Ann married just the quarter after the start of civil registration, meaning their marriage certificate would show their fathers' names!  :D

Marriage Dec quarter 1837 Thorne registration district, volume 23 page 655
Ann Johnson - George Middleton

Thanks,
This is great info.  Yes, the ship left london for portsmouth March 1851, then Portsmouth for Australia 24th March 1851.  The ship MARION was wrecked on Troubridge Shoal a few hours from Port Adelaide, South Australia in July 1851, but all crew and passengers were saved.

Thanks

Well well  :o :o

Shame they didn't stay until census night! I can't identify George in 1841 - there are just too many contenders  :-\

Thanks,
The family settled near Port Adelaide at Tam O'shanter Creek.  I believe two of the girls drowned in a dam on their property a few years latter, but I don't have the details in front of me now.
I noticed there was no Richd, or Elizabeth on the ship.  Had they died?

I can't see them on the 1851 census and FreeBMD shows possible deaths:

Elizabeth Middleton
Jun 1848 Thorne 23 500

Richard Middleton
Jun 1849 Thorne 23 520

Thanks for that Tati.
You mentioned that George and Anne's marriage certificate would show the parents names etc.  How do I go about getting a copy?
