St Cuthberts. Blaydon records
« on: Friday 27 June 08 01:14 BST (UK) »
Hi
Is there someone who could tell me how to get burial records and or MI s for this church, please?
I have just received the 1886 will of great great grandmother, Hannah Armstrong ,who died in 1891. In the will, she stipulates that she would like to be buried at St Cuthberts, Blaydon on Tyne with her husband and children.

This church doesn't appear on the NBI or Durham Records Online or NDFHS publications list and I can't even find it on genuki to see where the records would be held.
I would really appreciate some direction as to where I can find the records
Thanks
lilyj

Maybe it is Stella St. Cuthbert's.  Blaydon was part of Ryton.  Winlaton separated out of Ryton and was the parish church for Blaydon 1828-1845 then was Stella.

Thanks Janis
That sounds feasible judging from what I found from more searching since my posting . I appreciate your reply. It looks like there are only 1845-51 records online and the full records are at the Durham Records office. Thanks again

LilyJ, how did you go with your search?

This is pretty bizarre, but I was in Blaydon Cemetery just this afternoon, hunting for graves of relevant family names, and I snapped an Armstrong gravestone because I recalled an Armstrong back in my tree.

It goes:

In loving memory
Francis Armstrong of Blaydon who died August 16th 1?35 aged ?2 years
Also Hannah wife of the above who died June 16th 189? aged 74 years

If you want the photo, just let me know.

Pretty freaky that after I had visited the cemetery and got back to my hotel room, I searched +"parish church" +stella +"st cuthberts" at Google and this thread came up result number 3 and I'd actually taken this shot prior.

Hi there

Thanks for the message. What I have found since I last posted was a history of the church on google books which mentions that in the nave of the east end there is a window erected by the widow and children in memory of Charles Armstrong, son James and daughter Ann Elizabeth. Charles Armstrong and Hannah Armstrong were my gg grandparents, and in her will Hannah expressed the wish to be buried with her husband and children. I'm curious to know if she got her wish. I think I might be able visit the church myself this summer.
Thanks again

Hi

St Cuthberts is at the bottom of Blaydon Bank in Blaydon, but is St Cuthberts of Stella (a small village along the road to ryton).  I have asked a friend who attends the church to check for the window for you.
Northumberland - Addison, Bowles, Kirkup, Lowes, Mason, Patterson, Richley, Venus, Wardle, Williams
Durham - Pears, Robertson, Richley, richelieu, Summerell
Norfolk and Essex - Bowles, Ninham, Wiseman
Glos - Summerell, Williams

Thank you both very much. I was able to get to the church this past summer. I saw the window and took a photo. I found out that the remains in the church yard were removed to the Blaydon cemetery some time in the 1960s as the land was sold.It looks like there was a memorial erected at the cemetery to the St Cuthberts burials that were moved, but I didn't have enough time to go to the cemetery.I found this on the list of memorials on the Tyne and Wear Archives site. I expect it doesn't have all the individuals names on it.

It is very kind of you both to respond
Thanks again
