Does anyone have any information about a David Aubrey Lewis.

In 1884, he lived at Cwmamman (Glanamman or Garnant), near Ammanford and wrote a poem about a mining disaster at Garnant. He was also a juror at the Inquest for the accident which was conducted at the Raven Inn, January, 1884.

There are numerous David Lewis' on the censuses between 1881 and 1901, but no reference to David Aubrey Lewis specifically.

There is a marriage record for him though in 1891 at Llandilofawr parish.

I have a sneaky suspicion that he may have been landlord of the Travellers well pub in Rhyd-y-Fro, Pontardawe before he died on 14th June, 1908 (assuming that I have found the correct headstone).

The only information I have on him is on the following webpage:

http://www.cwmammanhistory.co.uk/Garnant_Colliery_Disaster/david_aubrey_lewis.html

Thanks,
Dave Michael

Hi

I have seen the comments in the link

In the absence of any birth reg - you will need to buy a copy of his marriage cert to get his age at that time and his fathers name

Hi Carole,
Checked Freebmd and plenty of David Lewis' but no birth records for David Aubrey Lewis coming up.

There are two ladies listed on the same page for the marriage record.
If I have found the correct headstone (which again only states David Lewis, Travellers Well, of this place), then his wife would have been Mary Jenkins before they were married in the first quarter of 1891.

All I currently have is circumstantial evidence that I have the correct headstone, but if it is correct, then the person was born on April 29, 1855.

That would make him 35/36 when he married - unless he was married previously.  Funnily enough - there is an 1886 birth for a David Aubrey Lewis on freebmd.  Aubrey was not a particularly common name in those days.

No actual birthplace is known (he could have been born in England but lived in Wales from an early age) and no definite birthyear is known.

Everything is based on assumptions - even the headstone which does not include Aubrey - so unless you buy a copy of his marriage cert to provide some firmer info, with a name like David Lewis in Wales you already know the problems

Hi again Carole
Thanks for the info on the younger D.A.Lewis. I wonder if he could be his son. You are right about the marriage cert; I need some firm information to work from.

Best Wishes,
Dave.

Tracking John Lewis back to the 1871 and bearing in mind that David Aubrey was possibly b 1855 - have a look at this 1871 entry for Glamorgan

RG10; Piece: 5355; Folio: 43; Page: 5

I'm not too hopeful as there is a submitted IGI entry for David Lewis b Whitchurch but it doesn't include Aubrey
