I want to find out when and how a Mary Baker came to NSW,Australia from Nassau, New Providence,West Indes.She came out here after1831 with children -----one being Henry Gardiner Baker born about 1820. She would have been a widow of Gardiner Baker.

Dear Lu,
I am having terrible trouble with my Mary Bakers.
No 1 is Mary Amelia Baker who came to Aust with her ch'n ...wife of Gardiner Baker and died ?? Their story is above in posts.

No2 is Mary A Baker (nee Mullen )( b.abt 1831 Cork Ireland,m 2/3/1850 Sydney and died aft1869) who married Gardiner's son ...Henry Gardiner Baker. Her father was listed as the late W.H. Mullen on her marriage cert.That is total of info I have.
I can't find any deaths as there are so many Bakers.
I have even bought certificates that looked right.... but weren't.
Where to go now?

Don't despair !              

I'm sure somebody, on this (or the New Zealand) board, will be able to help in finding some further info for your BAKER family.     But we need answers to a few more questions.

Firstly, just curious as to how you know that, Mary Amelia BAKER, actually arrived in Australia ?   (Because so far, she's not been found on a passenger list ... and there's been no death found for her either) ?

And you say also, that "she arrived (in Australia) with children".     Do you have the names these children ?

Mmm ... I really sympathise with you having to sort through all the many, many, Mary BAKER's.   

So you have the death certificate for Henry Gardiner BAKER (as mentioned on NZ thread).    And that will show his place of burial.     Have you checked records for that cemetery, to see if his wife Mary A. is buried with him ?    (There may even be a family plot ... perhaps his mother (Mary) is also buried there ? )

Henry's death cert. should also give "years spent in NSW" - that may provide a clue as to when he (and other family members )arrived in Australia.
(Incidentally, I can't find your BAKER family arriving in New Zealand ... so am inclined to think that the "Gardiner BAKER" who died in NZ 1889 (if he's related to Henry and Mary), possibly travelled to NZ from Australia. )

Thanks for keeping in touch.
To answer your questions:
On Ancestry/Rootsweb I was corresponding with someone related to Gardiner Baker(1765- 1832) and wife Mary Geer in the West Indies.
She knew this Gardiner had a son Gardiner (born abt 1802 )and thought his wife brought the ch'n to Aust aft 1832.No names for children.

When I got Henry Gardiners death cert and it stated born in West Indies from Gardiner and Mary Amelia--, I took it to be the link as he had to have come here somehow and with the Gardiner/West Indies facts it looked to all fit together.
Henry Gardiner Baker is buried at Balmain Cemetery on 9/11/1880.There is no entry for years in the colony.Also age abt 28 on marriage in 1850 which makes him born abt 1820-22

As you can see I can't move on the deaths of the Mary Bakers----too many!!!
I am going to try to "get"the will as suggested above.
I hope this post triggers someone who knows something.

Mmmm .... perhaps Mary BAKER (w/o Gardiner) did not come to Australia at all  ??   

I've just asked a question on the NZ thread, to see if any further info was forthcoming for the "Gardiner BAKER" who apparently died in Auckland in 1889.   Perhaps if we can find his place and date of burial, then a newspaper search for a death notice can be done, and more clues may be gained, that way.    [You may already know this .... the NZ Death Index does not list the names of a deceased persons parents .... that is why we go in search of cemetery records, (which quite often provide helpful info),  before resorting to purchasing death certs.]

The name Henry Gardiner Baker appears as a witness to the marriage of Mary Jane Baker & James Henderson in Sydney in 1847.  Their only child Jessie Amelia Henderson was born in Auckland NZ in 1857.  After Jame's death in 1866 Mary Jane remarried to Thomas Williams in 1869. She died in 1872.
I am holding the two certificate of marriage, birth of Jessie Amelia and her death cert. if you are interested.  I have deduced that Mary Jane was born c.1824
I feel sure I have the right connection but never would have thought of looking in the West Indies for her birth.  I wonder if there were other siblings?

I have found my Mary Baker and she is Mary Jane Baker and died in Sydney and buried at Sandhills,Sydney in 1842. Is there anyone who could look this up for me please as it is not on NSW BDM?

The Gardiner Baker will has been obtained by a fellow researcher but we didn't get any great leads from it at all.
