« on: Thursday 26 June 08 05:50 BST (UK) »
I want to find out when and how a Mary Baker came to NSW,Australia from Nassau, New Providence,West Indes. She came out here after1831 with children -----one being Henry Gardiner Baker born about 1820. She would have been a widow of Gardiner Baker.

Sorry I can't help you, but I just wanted to suggest that you post this on the 'Emigrants to Australia' board. You might have more success.

I can't say for sure, but I too have ancestors who were in the West Indies.  They went back to England first, and then came here in the 1850's from there.  I would think that would be by far the most likely route!

It would be very difficult to find their passages from the W Indies to England, but you could search NSW assisted and unassisted immigration records.  The assisted indexes can be searched at  http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/  There are unassisted indexes on Ancestry if you have access to it.

Have you seen this site?

http://www.bahamasnationalarchives.bs/Genealogy/Will%20Index/Will_Index_B.htm

If it is the correct Gardiner Baker his will was proved November 10, 1832.  It states on the site:

"Many wills also have as a part of the compiled file, probate papers and letters of administration."

Perhaps the letters of administration (if there are any) will help you get a more exact date of her arrival in Australia, or an idea if she went back to England first.

It looks like a good site for anyone interested in the Bahamas.

Hi - I linked the thread and yes it is your thread  ;D It  may help those on the Australian board who are helping you.

It is helpful to link threads about the same person...saves double searching. :)
