Does the name WINCUP mean anything
« on: Saturday 22 January 05 12:41 GMT (UK) »
Hello everybody
I am trying to trace the WINCUP family living in Rochdale in 1820`s and possibily moving to Liverpool later on.  Only information I have is that a James Wincup in 1850 was an Innkeeper.  Unfortunately I do not know where!

If this unusual surname means anything to you please contact me

There is a James Wincup aged 43 living in Deansgate, Manchester on the 1871 census married to Mary aged 42. But his occupation is given as Horsebreaker. This James was born in Darlington, Lancashire.
Allen, Faraday, Wood, Mack in South Shields
Linnell in Warwickshire
Mills and Halliwell in Liverpool and Lancashire

freeBMD lists 171 people named Wincup but only a few in Lancashire. Their list with GRO reference numbers is below - they seemed to be good at death, not much on birth:

Name Year Quarter Record Type District County

Wincup, Ann 1886 March Deaths Chorlton Lancashire
WINCUP, Jane 1843 June Deaths Ashton under Lyne Cheshire Lancashire
WINCUP, Mary 1838 June Deaths Manchester (1837-1924) Lancashire
WINCUP, Mary 1851 March Deaths Manchester (1837-1924) Lancashire
WINCUP, Sarah 1873 March Deaths Manchester (1837-1924) Lancashire
Wincup, William Henry 1902 June Marriages Liverpool (1837-1924) Lancashire

There are Wincups elsewhere but the most significant for your search for James might be:
WINCUP, Herbert James 1871 September Births Blything Suffolk
Wincup, James 1871 June Marriages Blything Suffolk
Wincup, James 1874 March Births Holbeck West Riding of Yorkshire
WINCUP, James 1874 March Deaths Holbeck West Riding of Yorkshire
WINCUP, James 1877 June Deaths St Olave Southwark London Surrey
Wincup, James Horace 1901 March Births Hartlepool (1859-1938) Co. Durham
WINCUP, James William 1860 September Births Wangford Suffolk

Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

My first stepfather was HENRY (HARRY) WINCUP, he living at HULVER STREET (Nr Lowestoft) Suffolk. Born abt. 1891. He was a fisherman and died from an accident when boarding his ship - 1938.   Father - GEORGE,  Mother - HARIETT PAISLEY.
