Immigration to Tasmania under the Indenture Scheme
« on: Monday 23 June 08 13:02 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am new to the list and am wondering if anyone can assist me with a link to find a list of immigrants from Engalnd to Tasmania under the Indenture Scheme.  My great, great grandfather is said to have come to Launceston on this scheme but I have hit a dead end.

Thanks
Phitzy

Hi Jen,

Thanks for the welcome.

My gg grandfather name was William CLARIDGE - he was born in Little Rissington in England in 1827.  He married Mary Ann Denehey in England but date is unknown.  He died June 9, 1896 in Ulverstone, Tasmania. I have been told a fair bit of information and have grandparents x 8 - back to 1645.  I am now just starting to verify the inofrmation I have been told.  The Aus-Tas roots web list has been extremely helpful with all my research too.

I was told that William came over as part of the indentured workers scheme and went to work for a Mr. Archer.

I cannot find William on the passenger list for assisted immigrants to Launceston on the below link but have sent them an email to ask if they could check for me.

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~austashs/immig/b-imm.htm

I was hoping that someone else may have been researching this too or have some information to help.

Thanks and Regards
Helen

A William Claridge, aged 19, arrived in Australia 19 July 1848 on the Royal Saxon, origin Banbury, Oxfordshire, on an Assisted Immigrant passenger lists (info from ancestry.com).  Oxfordshire is a neighbour county to Gloucestershire where William may have been from, so it is possible he travelled from Banbury. I can't find a ship's list for the specific 1848 voyage.  There is a return list from Sydney to Calcutta 31 Aug 1848 on the Royal Saxon, but the incoming list doesn't seem to be transcribed online yet (perhaps I didn't look in the right places!). If you can find the specific list or even a newspaper entry that listed the arrivals, you may find out if this is your William or not.

There is also a convict William Claridge of Somersetshire, sentenced May 1841 and arrived 1842.  I have no idea if he was close to the age of the William you are looking for.

I assume you have the info on Mary Ann's death in 1891, birth of son William North in 1857 at Port Sorell, and will of William in 1896?  There is more on the descendants of William North Claridge online, but I assume you found all that.

I found no other helpful info for you on the Tasmanian Pioneer Index 1803-1899 or on ancestry.com.

The Royal Saxon landed at Botany Bay July 19, 1848 according to
http://members.iinet.net.au/~perthdps/shipping/mig-nsw.htm . It is listed as a passenger ship. The transcriber identifies the source as Agent's Immigration Lists, (lists of immigrants in private ships), AL 2135. The reel is available at NSW State Archives (see http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/nrs_5316_14224.asp ). There is an online request at their index for assisted immigrants, same reel number.

Hi Phitzy and welcome from me as well

If you are in Australia (which I assume from the Flag :)  the NSW archives shipping films are available at a number of places in NSW and other states (mainly state libraries). I think most are part of the ARK(archives Resource Kit) set of data, described on the state records site.
http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/using_the_ark_assisted_immigrants_7131.asp

Some of the NSW Transcription agents (at least one that I know about)  also go to the archives and will transcribe information - for a fee.
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/howToSearch.htm#TranscriptionAgent

If this is not your man  :(   perhaps not relevant - but if you find someone else in NSW of interest  :)

Trish
