Hi everyone,
i wonder if i could pick your brains,i have an ancester called Richard Coombes/Combs brn abt 1797 in Headley Hampshire,England. In parish records in 1833 his wife Harrriot is refered to as wife of Richard, transported these last two years, now ,i have searched online lists for Oz and cannot find a match for that time, can anyone else find anything?,if not,how could i try and trace records of his trial?

Hi Gerome

Any chance he could have been known by another given name? I can't find a Richard in any lists either. I am very unsure of the location of the trials outside of the Old Bailey (sorry) but there are a number convicted at Southampton - could that be the main court for Hampshire?
James Coombes 1829 is closest to the time you want.  Sometimes prisoners listed to be transported, did not in fact go.

If he was transported, it would most likely have been to NSW or Tasmania. There is a death birth of a Richard J Coombes in NSW 1859, parents Richard and Mary E.  About all I can see.

I cannot think of anywhere else? Could it simply mean he died? transported to heaven? (I just been watching a TV show on the pentecostal churches  :D )

If not, then perhaps looking for a conviction in England is the best place to start

You obviously have the children born to Richard & Harriet but I found this site that may help, age is out but that was common & convict name was James Coombes & that was the name of his 1st born son. May help, not sure. May help  you to move on. There is a contact email.

Thanks Trish and boydi,

 Trish,
He doesnt seem to have died,i have found him on 1841 census,so,either he
wasnt transported after all which seems unlikely as p records said transported these last two years,or he was transported, served his sentance and returned.

boydi,
I have noticed that James aswell and wondered about him, trouble is,i am decended from the James that is Richards first born,so if it is him,he too must have returned.

Thanks again,
Gerome.
