Ilford Graveyards
« on: Thursday 08 April 04 01:31 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone out there would know of an address I could write to to find a burial in the Ilford area.  My grand mother died in 1943 and I would like to find out where she is interred or if she was cremated.. any help would be gratefully received

Thanks

MO

Hi Mo,
you could try:
London Borough of Redbridge
Town Hall
PO Box 2
Ilford IG1 1DD
Telephone: 020 8554 5000
theres more info on the website:
http://www.redbridge.gov.uk

customer care email: customer.cc@redbridge.gov.uk

they note "If you wish to trace a grave in Redbridge, genealogy searches can be undertaken by our cemetery staff for an hourly fee"
??? hopefully that wont be the case.

The "Mother Church of Ilford" is St Mary The Virgin, Great Ilford, which is in the High Street.  Despite being in the High Street St Mary's still has a burial ground and next to that is an extensive graveyard run by the local Council.    If your grandmother had a headstone, if she was buried there, it could well still be there.  I am a bit confused about Ilford as it is covered by the London Borough of Redbridge, but is officially in Essex, as witness the post codes IG1 etc.  So it might also be worth checking with Essex Records Centre or the Local History Library to see who's got copies of the burial records.

Hi, If you have not found where you were looking for yet, the City of London Crem. is just 10 minutes from Ilford at Manor Park.
