Hi Yvonne
I make it 38 yrs on the death cert entry. The 1861 census clearly has him as 30 yrs with his wife Ann 29 yrs and dau Ann Deuar MacAulay 4 yrs. Daniel was born in St Leith Edinburgh ca 1831  and his address for 1861 census was 22 Tobago St and as you say he was a labourer.
Reg No:685/1
Civil Parish: Midlothian St Cuthberts
ED 39
H Sched: 60
Roll CSSCT1861_124

Will see if I can find him on the 41/1851 census

Hi Yvonne

I can't find Daniel on either 1841 or 1851 census - unless I missed it.
Also he is not to be found on the IGI and I did a search of the OPR's on SPeople but still could not find him.
Not everyone had their children baptized so that may be the explanation.
Sorry I can't be of more help

Joy ;)

Occupation appears to be carter.  Do you have a marriage entry for him and Ann?  A search between 1832 and 1870 on the IGI brings up no results for Daniel and an Ann McNeill in either Scotland or Ireland.

Their marriage shows as Daniel McAulay and Ann McNeil, on the 7th October 1853 at St Cuthberts in Edinburgh (Ann's father shows as James McNeil). Their daughter, Ann Dewar MacAullay, was born 18th August 1856 in Edinburgh.

Hi

Mothers name looks like Susan McInnes?? Certainly the second capital letter looks the same as that in "India Street" the address of the deceased on the previous entry (190)

I think the COD looks like Internal organic affliction **something** poisoning. It could be "mercuric" if that mark under the word is just an artifact and not part of a letter with a tail.

Hi all,
I emailed SP Where i got the entry from, Here is what i got back ,

Quote
Thank you for your e-mail. Having looked at the entry the writing
appears to suggest that the mother's maiden name was Susan McQueen, and
the cause of death being 'Internal Organic Affection - Uraemic
poisoning'. I have attached a larger copy of the image to this reply: I
hope this helps.

Uraemic Poisoning was a term for Acute Renal Failure , So that now makes sense (I Think)

Have Attached a part of the new copy to see what everybody thinks, Hopefully this is a bit clearer :-\

Hi Yvonne,

Seeings as no one can find Daniel on the 1841/51, here's my two cents worth.  Could be completely wrong.

I agree the mothers MN is McQUEEN.  In my experience I have found McQUEEN, QUEEN and QUINN to be interchangable.  As there is nothing obvious coming up for this family under MacCAULAY and variants, maybe Daniel was the illegitimate child of Susan, and Daniel was reputed father.

I found this family group on the 1841 census in Edinburgh, Midlothian.  The Address is Castle Hill:

Peter QUINN  M  45  Labourer  Ire
June  QUINN  F  37  Lodgings  Ire
Susan QUINN  F  19  Female Serv  MID
William  QUINN  M  15  Town Carter  MID
Daniel  QUINN  M  6   MID

also people by the names of ARNOT, DOLLAN,  MULROY and LINDSAY staying there.

Susan is a bit young, but women can have babies at 13, and Daniel is also a bit young, but  ages are only as correct as the people telling them.  Pity the relationships are not shown in the 41 (but I have found that these are not always correct anyway, my GGgrandfather is recorded as being his grandmothers niece on the 51)

I don't have access to the 1851 census, but maybe someone else can find this family on it to either discount or confirm.
